He was enjoying this entirely too much.

“Thank you for being helpful. My reward for being patient and keeping my dick in my pants should be very nice. See you soon.”

As I turned down the brightness, I hoped that I could last another twenty minutes but I wasn’t sure about that. My balls had stopped aching but I was so hard all I wanted to do was explode. I didn’t think any of us had understood that my liking pain would make the whole balls as a barometer for losing shit a big problem.

But it was slightly less distracting since the book had been found, and I let out a breath as I opened my eyes. “It’s at Carrick’s place.”

“Great.” Alick was still looking pleased and naughty. “Feeling better?”

“Slightly.” Shifting, I appreciated being able to sit more easily but I knew the relief would be short-lived. “And my ability to focus has improved.”

Thank goodness.

“What were we talking about before my mates drove me insane?” The reward for this had to be amazing or we were going to reevaluate this decision. “Can I just say that mage shenanigans go way beyond anything dragon mates can come up with?”

“We were talking about your mate’s watches, I think?” Kenzie looked around slightly confused before focusing on Alick. “Does all this make you want a mage mate or a dragon one? I thought you’d want a dragon one but now I’m questioning that.”

Alick’s eyes got wide.

“My vote is dragon.” Kenzie looked over at Stefan, clearly wanting to know his answer.

“Well, um, originally I’d have said dragon because I love Boyd but…but the mages are starting to sound more interesting.” Stefan’s blush said interesting was the dirty kind.

He was right…they were dirty mates.

When we all turned to Alick, he couldn’t seem to decide what to say. “Um, well, I’m open to whatever the fates give me, but…but I’m kinda human, so I might not get one.”

That would not work.

“Don’t worry. We can find you one.” How? Oh. “Carrick has this spell that can find lost stuff. Your mate must be lost, so we’ll work on finding him.”

If Carrick could make me a sex dungeon before we’d technically mated, he could find where Alick’s mate had wandered off to.

“I think that’s a great idea.” Kenzie was so excited he seemed to miss how wide Stefan’s eyes had gotten. “And that’s not stupid like some kind of love spell. We’re just finding something important. Like your wallet or Carrick’s ugly watches.”

“Why are those ugly again?” For some reason, Stefan seemed to think that was very important because he was leaning over the table and looking very intent. “I don’t think I’ve ever noticed his watches.”

“They’re so ugly.” I couldn’t help rolling my eyes. “They’re all the strangest mix of real diamonds and plastic and he can’t tell the difference. It’s actually painful to see him wearing them sometimes and they’re so distracting. I was so sidetracked by one last night that I forgot to be angry at him. I can’t tell you why, though.”

“Ugh, privacy sucks.” Kenzie’s not-so-quiet mumble was ignored by all except a few other customers who loudly agreed with him.

Alick did an amazing job of ignoring Kenzie and smiled. “The watches distract you a lot, huh? And he has a ton? I bet he hides them someplace so you can’t find them too.”

“How did you know?” Were humans really psychic? Alick kept saying he wasn’t but he always just knew stuff. “He’s so stubborn and claims they’re private too but that doesn’t make any sense.”

One day I was going to find them all and start swapping them out for ones that were either all plastic or all real. The mix was making me insane.

Alick just giggled and waved his hands. “Ignore me. I’m sure you’ll figure it out eventually.”

I wasn’t so sure about that, but I would figure out how to get efficient bribes.

And that reminded me of what I needed to do next.

“Alright, I have to go back to Carrick’s place and let him bribe me into not complaining.” He had more than enough time to plan something amazing, so I could head back there without having to waste time actually running errands. “I will see you later this week for dessert night, and Alick, don’t worry, we’ll find where your mate has wandered off to.”

“Oh dear.” Stefan seemed to be worried about dessert night because he looked like his tummy was starting to churn.

“Don’t worry, Stefan. We won’t let you overeat.” We’d keep his tummy safe. “Have fun and remember privacy.”

Half the diner groaned as I hopped up and headed out the door, but they always forgot it, so I had to keep reminding everyone.

Privacy was important.

Rewards were important.

Reminding mages that shenanigans could only go so far was also important.

I kept all of that in the front of my mind as I drove back to my Carrick house and even as I climbed out of the car.
