“It’d be nice if I could teleport there between work and the rest,” I said, “so I could curl up next to you in bed. Maybe nuzzle my face into your neck. Maybe get a few bite marks on me throughout the night.”

I winked, and his smile became more authentic once again. “If only,” he said.

“Yes, if only.”

“Maybe I can plan a trip to LA when you have some downtime. It might be hard to leave Fearless, but I can make it work.”

Oh, I liked that idea. “That would be great. We’ll have to see when we can both get time away. I don’t want you to come here if I’ll have to cut it short to leave or something like that.”

Similar conversations followed throughout the rest of the week, and the week after. Work bred even more work. We couldn’t find a time where Sawyer could get to LA when I was free. It was always either a bad time for him or for me, and Elliott kept putting off another visit to Fever Falls until I had to push.

“Just a few more days,” I said as Sawyer and I video-chatted. “Naughty Sawyer ready to tear me up enough to make it worth my while?”

He beamed, offering a familiar growl that forced a rush of adrenaline through me.

Yes, finally.

In a few days, everything would be right again.

It hadn’t been so long, really, but even a few weeks away from Sawyer felt like months…if not a goddamn year.

After a bit more than a month, we managed to find our way back to Fever Falls. Of course, more than anything, I wanted to rush to Sawyer’s place for a quickie, but Elliott had made a reservation at Fever Pitch so we could catch up with Dax.

After all, we were only going to be there for two days before we had to be in New York for a film premiere.

As we all packed the booth, Sawyer kept close to me, his hand on my thigh as he offered a squeeze, then shifted his hand closer to my crotch, his touch offering the promise of what was to come after dinner—namely us.

Oh, the things I wanted to do with him. I was so on edge. I wanted him to pounce on me like the fucking animal he was and claim my body. Again and again and again.

It seemed almost unbearable as Dax and Jace caught up with us and Serena discussed her recent taped audition for a reality TV show.

“I’m not exactly thrilled to be on a show about has-been actresses,” she said. “But I’m nothing if not self-aware.”

Dax rolled his eyes. “Come on, Mom. You would hate that. Shows like that exist just so they can put you on TV and have Twitter and Insta-wars over your life and choices.”

“Daxie Pooh, at this point in my career, I’m lucky if people are giving me hell. It means they’re still thinking about me.”

“Your mom has a point there,” Elliott said.

Dax shook his head. “I think you and Carter need to hop on a plane and get back to LA before Serena winds up another Real Housewife of Beverly Hills.”

“Do you guys have contacts with their people?” Serena asked, her eyes lighting up.

“Dax, Carter—either of you fucked around with Andy Cohen?” Elliott teased. “Come on, Carter. Surely, he’s somewhere in your extensive Rolodex.”

“No, not Andy Cohen, for sure,” I replied.

“I doubt you could have made time for him at that premiere we were at the other night,” Elliott went on. “Jesus, that actor-who-shall-not-be-named-since-he’s-not-out was like a lion on the prowl. What is it you used to say? You have to reward persistence? Poor guy didn’t get anything for all that effort. I don’t have any issue with saying when a man is hot, and that guy is like the Gisele of men. Don’t think I’ve ever seen you turn down a guy like that before, Carter.”

“Well, persistence isn’t everything,” I said, laughing off Elliott’s comment, but I inspected Sawyer’s reaction. He smiled at me, as though trying to act like the story didn’t bother him, but I knew him well enough to know better, judging by the subtle twitch lingering at the edge of his mouth.

And the way Elliott glanced between Sawyer and me, he seemed to catch on too.

Since I’d accepted the promotion, I’d told Elliott about my relationship with Sawyer. Not the extent of it, because I didn’t want him to feel bad, but I wouldn’t have felt right hiding Saw from him…or anyone, for that matter. Still, in his mind, he clearly didn’t understand the difference between what Sawyer and I were doing and what I used to do with other guys.

But it was so very different.

“In lighter news,” Elliott went on, “I have an announcement to make.”

Where’s he going with this?
