Not home. Fever Falls isn’t Carter’s home.

The second we were inside, we had our mouths on each other. He tasted like mint, and I smiled at the familiar slide of his tongue. We were stumbling toward my room, Carter walking backward, alternating between kissing and ripping out of our clothes.

He ran into the wall beside the hallway. “I can’t make it any farther.” He breathed out heavily, and I pushed him down to his knees, then silently looked down at him to ask him if that was okay. Carter smiled.

“Suck me,” I told him, and he did—deeply and expertly. My whole body felt like it was on fire, jittery and needy, my eyes trained on him. “Fuck, you’re beautiful. Missed your mouth. And your laugh. And the way you joke when you feel like you’re getting too close, or that little gasp that pulls out of the back of your throat when you’re excited.”

Carter fumbled the blow job, as if my words surprised him and he didn’t know what to think. I grabbed his hair and fucked into his mouth, and then he was jerking himself off, and I was coming into his mouth just before he blew his load all over his hand.

“Fuck, that was good,” he said, falling onto his ass.

I held out my hand for him and helped him up. We cleaned off together, then climbed into bed. It didn’t matter that it was the middle of the afternoon.

We took a nap, but Carter slept longer than I did. I got out of bed and smiled at him, his body splayed out from how he’d been lying, hogging the mattress.

I kissed his head, pulled on underwear, and went into the kitchen to make chicken parmesan for dinner.

Later, he stumbled out of the room in a pair of briefs. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to sleep so long.”

“It’s fine. You must have needed it.”

“Yeah, the pace is a lot quicker out there. I’m not as used to it anymore. I was lucky if I averaged about four hours of sleep each night.”

I couldn’t help but flinch, and I hoped Carter didn’t notice. I couldn’t imagine that kind of lifestyle—the people, the parties, the men. How could Fever Falls compare to that? How could I?

“Do you want me to pour us some rosé?” he asked, and I smiled.

“That would be great.”

Carter got the rosé, I made our plates, and we sat at the table together to eat. There was a thickness to the air that I nearly choked on. I could tell Carter felt it too, like we knew we had to talk, and maybe our time was even more limited now, but neither of us wanted to say so.

After dinner, I tried to get him to skip the dishes, but Carter couldn’t handle it. Things like that drove him crazy, which I had to admit was cute, so we washed dishes together.

“Remember the water fight?” I asked.

He chuckled. “I do.”

“Don’t even think about it,” I said, and he looked at me innocently.

“What? Me? Never.”

But we didn’t have another water fight. We finished the dishes, and he asked, “Can we stay in bed all night? I know we were supposed to meet up with everyone, and if you want to, I will, but I just…”

“Yeah,” I told him. “That’d be nice. We can see everyone else later. You’ll be here for a week or so, right?”

His eyes darted away, and I felt an ache in my gut. “Just a couple of days, actually.”

“Oh.” I tried not to be disappointed. It was his career. I couldn’t complain about that. And I’d known from the start that this could happen, but I didn’t think he would be gone so much.

“We should probably talk,” Carter said, and I nodded.

“We can do that in bed too.”

We turned off the lights and made our way back to my bed. I leaned against the headboard, but Carter sat facing me, his legs crossed. “Elliott offered me a promotion. It’s a really great opportunity. More than that—a huge compliment from Elliott and Dax that they think I can handle the responsibility. They discussed my coming on board as an equal, and the chance to buy into the company.”

“Wow…that’s incredible,” I said, and meant it.

“Yeah, it is. Not something I ever really even thought would happen, or wanted to happen. I’ve always been happy being Dax’s most amazing PA ever, but this is the next logical step after everything I’ve done. And I can tell Elliott really wants the help now that Dax isn’t around the way he used to be.”

I knew how huge this was for him. It was an incredible opportunity, and no one deserved it more than Carter. How could I begrudge him that?

“But you’ll basically have to move back to Los Angeles full-time?” I asked, filling in the blanks.
