“You had enough to do,” she told him, not liking the guilt on his face.
“It was a waste of fucking time going to Montana,” Isaiah said darkly. “Especially considering that asshole somehow managed to follow you here. Wish I could work out how he did it.”
“My guess is he followed her without her knowing,” Sampson said. “Or he found her the same way he did, through Jenner.” He nodded at Gray.
“That’s the most likely,” Gray said. “And he was so furious that she ran that he tried to drown her.”
She shuddered.
“Anyway, my trip was a waste of fucking time and I could have been here, protecting you. I’ll go check this feed. You guys don’t have to come with me to my office,” Isaiah told them as they all stood to follow him. “I can see if there’s anything and let you know. Maybe Maeve should be resting.”
“That’s all I’ve done since I ended up in the hospital,” she grumbled. “I want to feel like I’m doing something.”
Isaiah nodded.
“We’d all like to feel that way,” Sampson said with a sigh. “Let’s go have a look.”
They all crowded around the computer in Isaiah’s office. He sped through the feed until they got close to the time she thought she’d gone outside.
“There I am.” She pointed to herself unnecessarily.
“I’m guessing this is about the time our cameras went off,” Isaiah muttered.
She was sitting by the pool. Even though she knew what was going to happen, she jumped when a dark figure approached. A whine of fear escaped her, unbidden.
Isaiah paused the screen, looking back at her with concern and anger.
She knew the anger was directed at the person who had done this to her.
“Keep going,” she told him.
“No,” Gray told her firmly. “There is no need for you to watch this. Come here.”
He drew her into him, pressing her face to his chest with his hand against the back of her head as he rocked her.
“Now play it,” Gray demanded.
There was no sound so it wasn’t like she could hear anything. But she still flinched for some reason.
Maybe she should watch. Maybe it would help her remember.
Or perhaps it was best she never remembered.
Gray continued to rock her as Sampson and Isaiah started swearing.
“Fucking bastard, I’m going to fucking kill him,” Sampson said darkly.
She jumped.
“Watch your anger in front of Maeve,” Gray said in a dark voice.
“It’s all right,” she managed to say. “I’m not scared of Sampson.”
“You flinched,” Gray grumbled.
She got that his protective instincts were probably raging and he likely had the need to expel some of his anger. But Sampson shouldn’t be his target.
“You’re right,” Sampson said. “I apologize.”
Surprise had her trying to lift her face from Gray’s chest. But Gray pressed her back against him.
“I think I’ve got him,” Isaiah said. “Fuck. God damn it.”
She turned, looking down at the image of the man who had tried to kill her.
“Fucker is wearing a mask,” Gray growled.
It was one of those masks that went completely over your head and had fake face. Scary and horrifying. Now, she’d probably be seeing that face in her nightmares.
Disappointment flooded her as she realized that their lead had gone nowhere.
Gray drew her back against his chest. “Don’t worry, baby. We’ll find this asshole.”
Lord, she hoped so.
Gray stepped out to the car to make a call as Maeve finished up her goodbyes with her friends.
He glanced over at the nondescript dark car that the two men Alejandro De Leon was insisting come with them were sitting in.
The third man was going to stay here for a while to make sure that asshole didn’t come back.
Fuck, he wished he knew who that asshole was who was stalking her.
He placed a call to Markovich.
“Gray, tell me you’re on your way home.”
“We’re just about to leave.” He’d sent him a message earlier telling him they were going to drive rather than fly. Then another message after talking to De Leon.
“Good. I know I don’t have to tell you to be careful. Just had an interesting phone call with Alejandro De Leon.”
“Fuck. I thought that might happen. What did he want?”
“A partnership. Of sorts.”
“What?” That wasn’t what he was expecting.
“Says that with our tighter connections it would be beneficial for us both. I explained that I had no interest in expansion. That I was looking to work less. But he said it didn’t have to be anything like that. Said something vague about how we could work out any details.”
“Fuck, Drew, I’m sorry. What do you think he wants?”
“Actually, what I think he really wants is to make sure that his family is looked after.”
“Maeve. By all accounts, he’s protective.”
“Yes, it wouldn’t really benefit him to have a partnership with me. I’m too small. And I can’t see him wanting to expand into Montana. But with Maeve here, I’m guessing he’d like some eyes and ears on the ground.”
