“I’m good at faking it.”

Damn.

She shot him a huge smile that lit up the Kia’s interior.

Well, double damn.

“I really have to go now.”

He resisted stopping her this time when she opened the door and climbed out.

In one way he was disappointed, in another he was now looking forward to seeing how this new twist in his undercover assignment went. “Mel…”

She glanced over her shoulder.

“Do you want me to follow you home?”

“To make sure I’m safe?”

No. “Yes.”

“I appreciate your offer, but I’ll be fine.”

“I’ll take you to dinner tomorrow night. We’ll go over more details then.”

“If Cookie shows up.”

“If she doesn’t, I’ll bring you dinner. I need Saint and his flunkies to start seeing me around. We need to make it clear to them that you belong to me.”

Her mouth opened and he swore he heard a soft hiss escape.

Fuck yeah. “I’ll see you tomorrow night.”

“Tomorrow night,” she repeated with a nod and shut the passenger door.

He waited until she was safely in her vehicle and out of the parking lot. Before he left, he snapped a photo of the Astro Van’s license plate. He wanted to get a shot of the vehicle identification number, too, but he’d have to figure out a way to get it when it wasn’t so obvious. If Saint saw him doing that on the camera, it might blow both his cover and his plan.

After that, he went home to take care of his “issue” by fantasizing about a gorgeous, sexy blonde with Caribbean Sea eyes, who was kind of funny, too.

Yeah, maybe this assignment wouldn’t be so bad after all.

Chapter Fourteen

With the office chair tipped back as far as it could go, Finn had his ankles crossed and his boots kicked up on the third floor conference table. He had a baseball cap pulled low and his eyes closed.

He’d been up a little too late last night taking care of business. Both in the shower and in bed.

Kissing his new fake girlfriend had made Finn a very busy boy.

It also made him tired. After he met with Crew, he’d go back home and crash for a few hours before heading over to The Peach Pit. Either to wait for Mel to finish her shift or, if she got stuck working a double, to go get her dinner.

He opened his eyes when his boots got knocked off the table. “You think this is your place, asshole? Keep your boots off the fucking table.”

He tipped the bill of his hat up and shot Crew a grin. “Got news.”

“Yeah? Good news?”

Finn nodded and sat up. “I convinced her to help.”

“Well, look at you, Pippi. Maybe you impressed her with your satin-wrapped, sock-stuffed package.”

“That’s a given, but I don’t need to stuff. We already had that conversation, remember? But truthfully… Since she really hates the Demons, it didn’t take much to convince her.”

“You mean it didn’t take much for her to agree to be a cooperating witness. I can’t imagine it didn’t take some arm twisting for her to agree to be your girlfriend.”

“That didn’t take much of an effort at all, either.”

Crew snorted, yanked out the rolling chair across the table from him and sank into it with a groan. “Now what?”

“I’m going to head over there later and hang for a little bit so we’re seen together and can show off our new ‘relationship.’ If all goes well, I’m taking her to dinner.”

“Then what?”

“Then I’m going to play the possessive, controlling boyfriend who can be a dick about her being around a bunch of men at a strip club. That’ll give me a good excuse to be extra clingy.”

“That’s a good angle.”

“Of course it is. I know what the fuck I’m doing.”

Crew snorted again, shaking his head. “Try not to stir up too much trouble with the Demons. We don’t want them banning you from the club or, worse, firing her.”

“I’ll simply pull the same bullshit they do when they treat their women like property. I already warned her my behavior might be over the top.”

“Well, redheads tend to be hot-tempered. Simply act accordingly.”

“You could’ve just stopped at ‘hot.’”

Crew grinned. “Could’ve, but didn’t.”

“Also, I cleared it with her about having a phone in the club. However, if it causes an issue with Saint or the prospects since it’s against club policy, I might grab one of the burners and hide it there.”

“Brains and dancing skills. Quite a catch there, Ginger Snap.”

Finn waved a hand down his body. “Don’t be hating on me because I’m the complete package. Maybe one day you, too, can achieve that illustrious status. You’ll just have to work a little harder. Maybe you can take the spot I’m vacating with the Peckers so you can work on your moves.”

Crew laughed so loudly that Butler, sitting at one of the desks transcribing wiretap recordings, had to pause. “Who said you were done dancing with the Peckers?”
