“Where is—”
“Taking care of a thing,” he interrupts, and I look up at the ceiling, I already know what that means. He’s probably killing someone or torturing them.
“Who broke in here, who shot me?” I have so many questions and want answers now.
Romeo sighs and turns his whole body so that he’s fully facing me.
“You ask a lot of questions.”
I glower in response. He’s just like his brother.
“Maybe if I got some answers, there wouldn’t be so many,” I rebuttal. He just stares at me… not saying much.
The door to the house slams but neither of us take our eyes off each other. We’re sworn enemies, and I haven’t forgotten that.
“You’re awake,” Kieran says, entering the room. He looks tired, his knuckles bruised and bleeding. I try to sit up but wince and lay back down. He moves his brother out of the way and sits next to me, pushing the hair from my face. Security fills my chest, and I want so badly to reach out to him, to lay next to him and it to just be us again. We only got a small portion of time to really see one another and now that’s gone.
“How do you feel?” he questions.
“Fine. What happened? Who was here?” I repeat the same series of questions I asked Romeo.
Kieran looks away for a second, his face turning red. He doesn’t trust me, in fact, he looks like he doesn’t know who to trust right now.
“I was just shot, I demand to know what the fuck is going on.” My voice rises, and this grabs his attention. My disrespect a quick way to get through his anger and overthinking.
“My dad sent those men to kill us.” My mouth drops, my eyes filling with tears.
“Are you sure?” Romeo questions with disbelief, but I believe it. The DeAngelo family cares about one thing, power. If he thought his son was failing at marrying me he’d just assume to wipe us both out and be done with it.
I blink slowly, this whole marriage thing was a scam for both Kieran and I. We’re nothing but damaged goods in the eyes of his father. We’ll never be safe with that power-hungry savage at the head of the table. I close my eyes, times like this I wish my father was here.
“Did you know about this?” Kieran asks, standing to face Romeo. Tension fills the room, and I slowly grab my gun with my hand that isn’t injured.
“Are you fucking serious right now?” Romeo shouts.
“You would be next in line if dad took me out, so explain to me how you didn’t know?” Kieran gets in Romeo’s face. Romeo shoves him away, his teeth bared.
“I don’t want your fucking position and you know that!” he yells, and Kieran runs his hands through his hair glancing at me. I just stare back, not sure what to say.
“We need to go home,” Romeo says quietly. I agree. I want Dominic, I trust Kieran but the rest of these DeAngelos are driven and I am right in the middle of the damn race for top dog.
“I agree. Let’s go.”
Silence blankets the room, Kieran looking at me with soft eyes only I can see.
“We’ll go in the morning. I want you to rest tonight, plus. I have to get rid of Eddie,” he explains, his face drawn in sadness.
“I’m sure he’ll be fine just tell him we’re going back to the city, give him a key to look after the place when we’re gone,” I suggest, sleep making my eyes heavy again.
“Is that the dead guy in the living room?” Romeo asks and my eyes widen in Kieran’s direction.
“Yeah, it is,” Kieran says softly, almost like he’s sad.
Covering my mouth, I close my eyes to fight back the tears. The world stops for a minute as I think about Eddie, he didn’t have anything to do with this and was killed anyway. Carnage follows Kieran wherever he goes, this stupid fucking legacy is nothing but a quick way to die. I hate this life. I hate it. I just wanted to live the life of a normal person with normal problems. Like leaking pipes and overgrown grass. But it’s apparent I’m born into the life of chaos and running only puts innocent people in danger.
“I’ll take care of him so we can leave first thing in the morning,” Romeo informs before leaving the room.
Kieran grabs me by the back of the head aggressively and kisses my forehead.
“I’m going to shower, you okay?” He gives me a stern look and I nod. If he didn’t have blood splattered all over him I’d protest him showering and ask him to lay down with me.
He walks into the bathroom leaving the door open, dropping his pants to the floor his chiseled ass is in full view, his back of tattoos magnificent. He turns the shower on and steps in before it even has time to warm up. I can’t help but stare at him, the way he leans both arms on the tiled wall and drops his head so the water rushes over it and down his neck. I can tell he’s replaying the night’s events in his head, but what does he really think about his dad trying to kill us?
