“Do you and your buddies make it a habit of breaking into houses and hurting women?” Kieran viciously baits, scratching the back of his head with the barrel of his gun.

“Dude we come here to party every once in a while, we didn’t know anyone lived here,” Eddie says, holding his hand out as if it will keep Kieran from closing the distance. He can’t stop him though, this is just a glimpse of Kieran exercising his power, a cloud of darkness breeding around him as he stalks his prey down into the dark of night. Biting my lip, I both crave and fear him. He’s unstoppable.

“Did you miss the two fucking cars in the drive?” Kieran points over his shoulder to our cars, and the guy looks like this is the first time he’s seeing them. Is he high?

“Uhhh,” he replies dumbly.

“It doesn’t matter.” Kieran squats down so Eddie has no choice but to look in the vast well of Kieran’s eyes. “You put your hands on mine, and that isn’t going to go without repercussions.” He aims his gun at the guy, and I’m running out of the house before I know it. My feet now wet from the dew on the grass.

“Kieran, no!” I scream, my hand held out in hopes of reaching him before the rest of me can tackle him away from the stupid man child.

“Go back inside now,” Kieran orders, and I glower in response. How dare he talk to me in that tone? I’m not a child.

“You cannot just kill some guy because he shoved me,” I reason with him, or at least try.

“I can, and am.” He pulls the slide back, racking a bullet into the chamber.

“If you do that people will come looking for him, and we will have to leave.” I try and bargain with him. He said he didn’t want to go back to New York, and if he kills this guy, we will have to leave. This is not our territory, we won’t get away with this as easily.

He lowers his gun, and it’s then that I notice a wet stain on Eddie’s pants. He pissed himself.

“Eddie, you better thank her because she just saved your life.” He growls, raising a brow. His shoulders tense and jaw tight. He doesn’t want to let the guy go, in fact, he reminds me of a man who got all worked up to get laid only to get shut down just before getting to the good part. He has blue balls but not for sex, but for taking the life of another.

“Dude, you’re fucked up.” He trembles, getting up onto his feet. He brushes his jeans down of the grass sticking to them and I can’t help but find his assumption of Kieran comical.

“You have no idea.” I laugh out loud, and Kieran gives me a hard look that has me cover my mouth to keep from giggling louder. Kieran is the fucking devil in a suit, he doesn’t function like a normal human being or even someone who might have a mental illness. Kieran DeAngelo is his own species of man.

“I know your kind, Eddie.” Kieran slips his gun into the back of his slacks, looking over to the lake. “You’re spoiled and work for nothing.” Kieran tilts his head to the side. “You have no idea what it’s like to be a man, because if you did you wouldn’t have come into another man’s house and put his hands on his woman.” I roll my eyes at this, but let him continue what he has to say to the guy. “I want you here tomorrow. At noon. Do you understand?” My mouth drops. What is he doing?

“What? Why?” The kid looks to me to save him, again.

“You’re going to help fix what you broke for one, and you’re going to help straighten this place up.”

“Are you serious?” A blank stare comes across his face.

“We could call the cops instead?” I shrug, and Kieran gives me an ugly glare. I was just joking to scare the kid but apparently he doesn’t know that.

“Or I could just shoot you, if you’d rather?” Kieran reaches for his gun.

“No, I’ll be here! My parole officer won’t be happy if you call the cops man,” Eddies informs, seeming more afraid of going to jail then the wrath of Kieran.

Silence sits over us all and the guy starts to walk away.

“Oh and Eddie, if you don’t show up… I’ll come looking for you.” Kieran waves his gun back and forth like it’s a nice little treat just for him.

When the guy is out of sight, gone into the thick woods, a hand is placed among my cheek.

“I wasn’t really going to call the cops.” I feel like I have to explain, and I notice Kieran exhale. Knowing I’m not a rat is relieving.
