The other man sighed. “I still don’t like it. And I’ve made a decision. It had already been mostly made, but I’m retiring.”

Brody gave him a surprised look. “Are you sure?”

“Because of what happened last night?” Autumn asked.

“It was the final straw. I’ve been selective about what jobs I take for a while now. But I’ve no interest in working any longer. And I don’t want to be away from the two of you, or drawing you into more danger. And I don’t want either of you worrying everything time I go out.”

“I won’t lie, Daddy. I’m really glad you won’t be doing dangerous stuff.” Relief filled Autumn’s face. He knew how hard it was on her when he wasn’t here.

“I’m relieved too,” Brody told him.

“I’m probably going to keep you on lock down for a long while.”

Brody knew they’d have to work to get him to ease up on his protectiveness. But eventually, he needed to see his family and his friends.

Autumn rested her face on the Fox’s thigh. “We’re always here for you. And we know you’ll always take care of us.”

He ran his fingers through her hair. “I’m sorry I had to leave you last night . . . that I drew back from you.”

She stared up at him. “You had to be the Fox then. I understood.”

He shook his head. “I got you something.” He reached into a bag by his side and drew out the bunny and puppy toys he’d won her at the arcade. “I couldn’t bring them all back, but I went and got these for you.”

“Oh, Daddy! You didn’t have to do that, but thank you!” She hugged him tight.

“I can’t neglect the two of you. I can’t have you regret choosing to be with me. I know it’s not easy.”

“Actually,” Brody told him. “It isn’t hard at all.”

“Because we love you,” Autumn added. “And we want you. And I know that you needed to go find that guy who shot Brody-bear.”

“Did you find him?” Brody asked. He didn’t care about what had happened to him, but their girl had been traumatized.

“I did. You don’t need to worry about him again.”

A sigh left Brody. “Did he tell you anything?”

“Not a lot.” The Fox cupped Autumn’s cheek. “Someone hired him to kidnap Autumn.”

“What?” Brody asked. “Who?”

“I don’t know. It was done on the darkweb. I have his phone, though. Want to take a look?” he asked Brody.

Brody nodded. “Fuck yes.”

Less than an hour later, he had an address. He knew exactly who had tried to have their girl kidnapped.

He turned from his computer to look at Autumn and the Fox. “It was Brad. Your ex-boyfriend tried to kidnap you.”

“I want to go.”

“No,” the Fox replied.

Urgh! She wanted to stomp her foot in frustration, but she knew that all that would get her was a sore bottom. And apparently, she was already owed two punishments.

She’d been arguing all morning that she should get to go and confront Brad over what he’d done.

She still couldn’t get her head around it. Why would Brad want to kidnap her? Had he intended on killing her?

“Should have just killed that fucking bastard,” the Fox muttered as he studied images of Brad’s house that he’d somehow procured. He and Laura were currently out on bail.

She swallowed heavily. She knew that Brad’s fate was sealed the moment the Fox learned he’d hired that man to kidnap her.

It still made her feel sick to her stomach to realize the man she’d worked for, had been involved with, would do this to her.

“I need to be there when you talk to him.”

“No.” The Fox glared at her. “You are not coming.”

“Didn’t you feel better after confronting Pavel, Fox?” Brody said almost casually.

She held her breath as the Fox turned to Brody. She didn’t want Brody to get in trouble on her behalf.

“It will be dangerous.”

“You’ll keep us safe.” Brody eyed him steadily.

“Clearly, I can’t always keep you safe since you’re sitting there with stitches.”

Maybe Brody wasn’t just doing this for her, but for the Fox too. To show him that they still had faith in him.

“You know you’ll keep us safe. You go in and secure Brad and Laura, then we’ll come in and Autumn can talk to him. Then we’ll leave.”

“And how are you going to get there?”

“With you,” Brody said. “We’ll wait in the car.”

“Oh, will you?” The Fox strode toward him. Brody swallowed heavily, stepping back until he was trapped against the wall by the bigger man.

If she wasn’t desperately wanting the Fox to agree to take her with him, then she might have appreciated how hot they both looked.

“Who will watch you while you’re in the car waiting? Shall I just leave you with a snack and the window slightly open. The two of you aren’t dogs!”

“We’ll be fine,” Brody said.
