He paused, staring over at the terrified man. “Look at me, I’m a poet and I didn’t know it.”

Moving to the sink, he pulled on some surgical gloves. It was a real bitch to get blood out from under your nails.

Then he strolled back to the man in the chair. He was aware of how manic his grin was. He didn’t feel like smiling. Nope, there wasn’t much to smile about. Well, other than the fact that he’d found the asshole who’d dared to touch his girl. To shoot his Pup.

Okay, so maybe there was something to smile about.

But mostly the crazy smile on his face was all for the man strapped to the chair, who’d just pissed himself.

“Damn. And I just had the floors cleaned. Don’t you know how hard piss smell is to get out of concrete? Never mind, I’m thinking about carpet. You go ahead and piss all you like, I’m sure I can find a way to clean it up.”

He picked up a pair of pliers. “Now, it’s time we had a bit of a chat about who hired you and what you were trying to do with my girl.”

It didn’t take long until the guy was singing like a canary. Probably just as well. The Fox needed to get home. Even though this asshole deserved everything that happened to him, there was something tugging at him, pulling him back to his Bunny and his Pup.

They needed him.

After taking care of the dead body, which was a bloody, messy job, he cleaned himself off, thinking about what the asshole had told him.

The information hadn’t been very satisfying.

A job he’d taken off the darkweb. He didn’t know who had hired him. And he’d been hired to grab the girl.

With a groan, he got dressed. He seemed to have more questions than answers. But he had the asshole’s phone. So maybe Brody could do something with that.

And he didn’t like that.

Not. One. Bit.

Brody woke up needing to pee really bad.

He rolled over, groaning as his arm ached. Fuck. Why did his arm hurt? What happened?

And why was his head thumping?

Opening his eyes, he looked around. Where was Autumn? The Fox?

He grabbed his glasses, then stumbled into the attached bathroom to relieve himself. When he came back into the room, the Fox was staring at him from where he sat in the armchair.

“Fox? What are you doing?” He sat back on the bed as he remembered why his arm was hurting.

Shit. He’d been shot.

Everything rushed back to him. How long had he been asleep for?

He glanced around and found Autumn lying on the very edge of the bed. She had her pacifier in her mouth and Freddy Fox held tight in her hand.

“I checked the cameras. She only fell asleep about an hour ago.”

“What? Why?”

“Guessing she was trying to wait up for me. And watch over you. She was so scared.” The Fox’s voice sounded almost haunted.

“I’m fine,” Brody reassured him.

“But you might not have been. She needs you, Brody. I need you.”

“I’m here. I promise. I won’t go anywhere.”

“Yeah, because neither of you are leaving this den for at least fifty years.”

Ouch. Hopefully he eased up on that.

Wait. Wait up for him . . . where had he gone?

“You went after the guy that tried to kidnap her?”

The Fox nodded. Then he crooked a finger at him. “Come here. I need to hold you.”

Brody eyed him. Was he all right? He seemed a bit off. But he guessed last night had been hard on all of them. Climbing from the bed, he walked over to the other man who drew him onto his lap.

He buried his face in the Fox’s neck, breathing him in.

Letting him calm him.

Gradually, he noticed the Fox’s tension melt away. “I’m sorry, Pup.”

“Why are you sorry?” He drew his face back, staring at the other man.

“I’m to blame for you getting shot.” The Fox started to shut down again, his face closing off and Brody grabbed his chin.

“You listen to me,” he told him fiercely. “You are not to blame.”

The Fox’s eyes flashed, heat filling them. “I am.”

“Nope. I won’t hear that from you.”

“Autumn was nearly kidnapped and you were damn well shot!”

“Not. Listening.” Now he was just getting mad. Stubborn Dominant.

“Brody-bear is right,” Autumn said sleepily, sitting up in bed to rub her eyes. “It wasn’t on you, Daddy.”

“I shouldn’t have taken you there. If we’d stayed here you wouldn’t have been hurt. Our girl could have been taken from us!”

“But I wasn’t. Because you were there.” Autumn got up and walked over, kneeling next to them. “You saved us. You always protect us. There was nothing else you could have done.”

“Except not take you.”

“Fox, we can’t live our lives in hiding. I know we’ll be safer, but sometimes a risk is worth the gain, right?” Brody slid down onto his knees next to Autumn, who looked exhausted. They both stared up at the Fox.
