His brown eyes widened. “You just said pussies are tougher than balls.”

“That’s a known fact. If I got kicked in the crotch at the same time you did, who do you think would be back on their feet first, if I even went down at all?”

She swore he paled a little. Oh yes, his face definitely got whiter and maybe even green around the edges.

She shot him a smile. “It’s also why men could never have babies. Humans would go extinct. You guys can’t even handle a simple cold.”

“Unfortunately, I heard no lie in what you just stated. I’ve helped with some roadside deliveries. They were…” He grimaced. “It… The head… The stretching… The… Yeah, you women deserve medals.”

Fletch’s chest expanded and he stepped back, spread his boots wider, loosening up a little by shaking out his arms, bouncing on his toes and stretching his neck to the left and to the right like a prize fighter.

She shook her head and rolled her eyes. “Really?”

He grinned and shrugged. “Well, yeah, I have to ‘mitigate the damage.’”

“You really think I have that much power behind my hit?”

“I don’t know, do—”

She didn’t wait for him to finish before making contact with his jaw using her fist. Hard enough for the impact to twist his neck, his whole face to shift and a grunt explode from him. She held back just enough so she wouldn’t break her fingers, or his jaw. She didn’t want either of them landing in the ER.

Plus, it would suck explaining those medical bills to Crew.

He grabbed his jaw and worked it. “Damn,” he groaned. “I didn’t tell you I was ready and you could’ve hit me where I wouldn’t have a damn bruise to explain. And, to be fair, it should’ve been open-handed.”

“Fair?” Nova didn’t fight her grin. “There are no rules in fight club.”

He snorted, then groaned again. “That’s not the saying and this isn’t fight club.”

She shrugged. “You say potato, I say too fucking bad. You offered, I accepted. Now quit your whining.”

He continued to move his jaw around to test it. “Man, you have a mean right hook.”

“I actually held back and to be honest, I’m much better with my Glock.”

“Let’s not test that theory.”

She tipped her head to the side. “Smart choice.”

He tipped his head back. “Is my nose bleeding?”

“I didn’t punch you in the nose.”

He pulled his lips back to show her his teeth. “Any missing?”

She shook her head. “No.”

“Good. I didn’t need you fucking up my pretty face.”

She rolled her eyes. “Don’t worry, it’s still pretty.”

“So,” he grabbed her hips and pulled her into him, “are we even now?”

With a twitch of her lips, she answered, “I guess so.”

“That means you forgive me?”

She stared up at him and noticed his brown eyes held a spark. “I’m still working on it.”

“What will get you there faster?”

“Oh, I don’t know. I’m sure you can come up with something that involves us getting naked. Otherwise, I can make a list.”

“I have my own naughty list, thank you very much.” He laughed but he quickly sobered as he brushed his thumb back and forth lightly over her still sore cheek. He whispered, “Sorry you dealt with that shit.”

She didn’t know if he was talking about Russo or him backhanding her. Either way, it sounded like he meant it, and anyway… “Fletch, it’s over and done with. Let’s put it behind us and move on to better things.”

“You mean bigger, better things.” He grabbed her hand and pressed it to his zipper.

“Let’s not get carried away.”

He dropped his head until his mouth hovered just above hers. “Okay, fine. Better things like this?” He crushed his lips to hers.

His tongue slid along the seam of her lips demanding entrance, which, of course, she granted. The tips of their tongues touched tentatively at first. When he twisted his head to take the kiss deeper, their tongues began an intricate tango.

A dip. A swirl. A slide. All done with flawless execution.

Their hearts kicked, mouths melded, breaths mingled. Creating a true and in-sync partnership.

When his fingers curled around the back of her neck, they didn’t stay there long. He slid his hand up until his fingers tangled tightly in her hair, holding her just where he wanted her, giving him control to lead this dance.

Not that she fought it.

She found, unlike with other men in her past, she didn’t mind handing it over to Fletch in the bedroom. All because of that solid trust that had built between them. The way he made her feel comfortable without even trying.

They were equals. Partners.

And the best part was, the power switched easily between them during sex. He never forced it on her and because of that, she never demanded the same.

But they weren’t having sex. Not yet, anyway, since he was busy taking her mouth like a conqueror claiming a new land.
