“Any time, sweet girl,” he responds before he leaves me alone in the apartment.
I ponder our conversation as I make something to eat and grab a coffee before settling at the breakfast bar. My parents always taught me to be strong in the face of adversity. I learned to defend myself at thirteen. My father thought it would be good for me to know how to be safe.
Even though I had bodyguards follow me around since I can remember, I’m not some pushover. Enzo de Rossi cannot scare me. And after my talk with Mario, confidence brims inside me as I finish up my food and tidy the kitchen.
Enzo may be the Boss, but I will make the King fall.
Chapter 9
Enzo
“There isn’t a chance in hell I’m bowing down to any fucking Irish mobster,” I inform Franco Moretti. "They're nothing but animals."
Franco chuckles. He's known me most of my life, and even though he is a few years older than I am, he's still someone I can get along with. Franco took over as the Boss of the Moretti Familia when his father stepped down. He’s one of the few men I know that wanted to be a leader before he turned sixteen. He made his first kill at twelve, and since then, he's delved into the darkness without guilt.
"What are we going to do about the arms coming in this weekend?" I ask, pushing the folder with the information toward him.
"I have my men setting up. We will be waiting for them. It's not every day you get to kill fifty Irishmen." His grin is nothing short of devilish. "If you'd like to join us, perhaps we can go for a drink after to celebrate."
"I want to be right there, in the throng of it. I need to..." I allow my words to linger in the air before continuing. "Release tension."
"Is this about the pretty new girl that you have living with you?" His dark brow arches as he regards me with a smile. "I heard your father left you with a bit of a legacy to continue."
"He did. I think this was his last fuck you to me," I inform him with a smile. "He always told me I would get married, even though I denied it. But what makes me angry, frustrated even, is that the contract is with the Cavallones."
"I believe so. Interesting choice from Salvatore. I suppose he's ensuring their lineage ends with her. It's clever."
I can't help but laugh. "Only you would think that."
He narrows his gaze, his dark eyes trying to dig deep inside my mind. "You don't?"
"I don't know what to think. Also, I need to talk to you about Tommaso. When I was questioning Olivetti, he mentioned he'd been working for the Cavallones. My men are digging into it. Do you know anything about it?"
"I've heard whispers. Apparently, he's a man who knows what he wants. Since Tommaso is dead, thanks to your clan, I have a feeling someone is going to pop out of the woodwork. Tommaso wanted to be Boss for far too long not to have a back-up."
Franco's words hit right in my chest. Something doesn't feel right, and I can't quite put my finger on it. "I don't like it. My intuition is telling me there's much more to the contract, and to the Cavallone family than meets the eye."
"Perhaps there's someone on the inside?" Franco suggests, causing my body to stiffen. I didn't want to voice it, but that could be what's bothering me. "
"I'll start questioning tomorrow," I tell him as I ponder this idea. If we have a mole in the clan, I'll find him, and then I'll fucking kill him. But not before I make him pay for hours.
"If you need anything, let me know. I look forward to hearing what you come up with. And by the way, I can't wait to meet your woman. I've seen her around, quite the little vixen." Franco laughs when I do at his analogy. He's not interested in her. I can tell by his expression there's no desire in his eyes, but he is intrigued.
I nod slowly, wondering what to say about Luna. I didn't expect her to be so fiery, but I have a feeling my father knew it. That's possibly why he chose my fate to be linked with hers. Since I knew I would be Boss, I told him I would never marry, but even in death, my father knew what he wanted for me, and I have no choice but to obey. "She's... different." It's my final response to Franco, who chuckles.
"That's not a good thing," he says as he leans back in his chair, his hands behind his head, and he looks like he's on vacation, all that's missing is the sun and some women in bikinis waiting on us.
