Turning until our bodies were pressed together, I wrapped my arms around his neck. “Are you going to give our sons-in-law as much trouble as my dad gives you?”
His head reared back, and his dark eyes narrowed. “Mis pequeñas princesas don’t need boyfriends, let alone husbands. They have me to take care of them.”
“I didn’t mean anytime soon.” I barely stifled a shiver over how sexy it was when he spoke in Spanish and focused on how ridiculously over the top he was being about our daughters. “And when they’re all grown up and find someone they fall head over heels in love with, I expect you to be a lot more mature about it than my dad was.”
“Sure.” He flashed me a smug smile that made me suspicious of his quick agreement. “He left me a lot of room to maneuver, so that shouldn’t be too difficult.”
That was putting it mildly. My dad had been pissed when we’d sat him and my mom down the night Diego had hunted me down at my doctor’s appointment to tell them that I was pregnant and we were getting married the next day. If it hadn’t been for my mom reminding him of how things had gone down when they’d met, I was pretty sure he would’ve tried to knock out Diego before tossing him out of his home and locking me in my old bedroom. My mom finally made him see reason—to a certain degree—and he’d begrudgingly given his consent to our marriage...but only if we let him make all the arrangements. As long as I became his wife, Diego hadn’t cared how or where the ceremony took place. But my dad knew how much my mom was looking forward to my wedding day, so he’d pulled as many strings as he needed to make it special. After organizing a gorgeous dress, flowers, and reception at one of my favorite restaurants, he’d still glared at Diego when he’d walked me down the aisle, and the officiant had asked who was giving me away. And he hadn’t stopped glaring at him yet. “We probably shouldn’t use my dad’s behavior as the standard for how to behave when our daughters are old enough to date.”
“Elena won’t even be ten for another four months,” he growled as his hands slid down to the base of my spine. A muscle jumped in his jaw, and I giggled over how just the mention of one of our girls having a boyfriend drove him up the wall.
“You’re such a good father.” I dropped one of my hands between us to pat his chest. “Even though you tend to be just a wee bit overprotective with the girls.”
He lowered his head to brush his lips across mine before whispering, “When you’re blessed with five little girls who take after their gorgeous mother, there’s no such thing as too protective.”
“It’s a good thing you had so many little sisters growing up.” I flashed him a mischievous grin. “You were already used to being outnumbered by females.”
“But at least my brother helped even the score a little bit.”
I hadn’t planned to share my news with Diego until I’d been able to confirm my suspicion was true, but he’d just given me the perfect opportunity, and I couldn’t waste it. Plus, I wasn’t sure I’d be able to keep it from him for much longer anyway. I was never able to hide anything from Diego because he was so attuned to me. He always spotted the signs when something was on my mind—often before I even realized it. I was surprised that he hadn’t broached the topic with me already but also thrilled that I had the opportunity to spring it on him this way.
Wrapping my fingers around his forearm, I pulled his hand between our bodies and pressed his palm against my belly. “Maybe the next baby will be a boy, and then you’ll have a little more testosterone in the house.”
His dark eyes filled with the same awe as they had each time we’d found out I was pregnant. My sexy husband hadn’t been kidding back when we’d met, and he’d said that he wanted to have a houseful of children. We could have a dozen, and he'd still be more than okay if I wanted more. “You’re pregnant?”
I gave him a jerky nod as I sniffled to hold back the tears that suddenly welled in my eyes. “I think I am. I haven’t taken a test yet to confirm, but I’ve been super emotional, and my period is late so…”
