He pulled up outside Gabrielle’s place and stared up at the house. This place belonged to Daemon. Gabrielle had no choice but to do as she’d been told, for twenty-one years. Rosalie must have seen some of it, and as she got older, understood what was going on.
Colt climbed out of the car and made his way up the driveway. Before he got a chance to knock, Petal was the one to open the door. He’d already seen her car parked and figured she’d be home. Petal and Rosalie were inseparable. All his informants had told him that. They never went anywhere without each other and always had each other’s backs. They were two peas in a pod and all of that.
“What are you doing here?” Petal asked.
“Are Rosalie and Gabrielle home?”
“Of course they are, but that doesn’t tell me why you’re here.”
“Petal, who is it?” Rosalie said.
Colt looked over Petal’s head to see his wife standing behind her. Rosalie had pulled her hair back into a small bun at the base of her neck. She wore a t-shirt that should have clung to her curves, but with the weight she had lost, looked too big for her. She also wore a pair of jeans.
“We don’t have an … appointment,” Rosalie said.
He saw her face go a little pale.
“I could just slam the door in his face.”
“What is taking you two girls so long?” Gabrielle asked. “Colt, I had no idea you were coming over.”
“None of us did,” Petal said.
“My mom has sent me to get you. All three of you,” he said, making a point of looking at Petal. “She’s making Sunday lunch, and she wanted to invite you all.”
He had no idea what else to say, but if he didn’t get them home, his dad was going to be pissed, as was his mother. Funnily enough, his mother scared him a little more than his dad. What Kim wanted, she got. Kim had always wanted a big family. It was why Warden had made her an integral part of the clubhouse. She had a lot of family around her.
“Oh,” Gabrielle said. “That is so nice and it means I don’t have to go to the store to get anything for dinner.”
“Mom, Petal and I were going to get it.”
“But why bother when we’ve got a nice invite? This is so lovely of your mother,” Gabrielle said.
He watched as Rosalie took a deep breath, closing her eyes as she did so, and flaring her nostrils.
“Her Sunday dinners are a treat and she goes all out,” Colt said.
“Will there be other club members?” Rosalie asked.
“No, not that I know of,” Colt said.
“Give me a moment,” Gabrielle said. “Petal, come and help me.”
“We’re going?” Petal asked.
“What are you doing?” Rosalie asked.
“Inviting you for lunch.”
“I can see that, but why? We’ve been married for three months, and this has never happened, but then I tell you something … personal, and what?” She shrugged and he saw her hands were shoved into the pockets of her jeans.
“I don’t expect you to trust me and I accept that, but my mother loves feeding people,” he said. “It is all completely innocent—”
“You told them,” Rosalie said.
“We need to know everything about Daemon—”
She shook her head. “You are not using my mother to get to him, do you understand me? She has been through enough and I’m already doing this…” She stopped.
“You’re already doing what?” Colt asked.
Rosalie shook her head and opened her mouth only to close it when Gabrielle and Petal reappeared. He needed to find out what the fuck Rosalie was doing.
“Come on, honey, go and get in the car.”
He stared at her and knew she wanted to tell her mother no, and to not get in that car, but she didn’t. She brushed past him and he wanted to grab her and shake the truth out of her. He waited for Gabrielle, who looked so happy. Colt didn’t know if any of the other brothers would get an invite but he hoped his mom told them they would get fed another time.
Colt had expected Rosalie and Petal to get into his car, but they hadn’t. He blocked them in, in the driveway. He walked toward Rosalie’s window and she wound it down.
“You know, I am quite happy to drive you,” Colt said. “I’ll take you there and bring you back.”
“Nah, it’s fine,” Petal said. “I’m more than happy to drive me and my girl. Looks like you’ve got company.”
“Mom, we can drive you,” Rosalie said, hanging out the window to be heard.
“It’s fine, honey, you can follow us.”
Rosalie glared at him as she wound up her window. Walking over to his car, he held the door open. Gabrielle thanked him and sat in the seat beside him. He got behind the wheel and turned over the ignition.
