Until she was saturated in me.
Until she was writhing and screaming my name in ecstasy.
And then I would start again.
The room was quiet, aside from our rapid breathing and the rain that tapped against the window. Sofia rested in my arms, her hair splayed beneath her. I stroked my fingers through her tresses, liking how silky they felt on my hand.
“Sofia.”
“Egan.”
I smiled and pressed a kiss to her head. “You must be tired.”
“No, actually, I’m still running on adrenaline.”
“May I ask you something?”
She tilted up her head. “You can ask me anything.”
“How did you get involved with HJ? I assume because of Damien?”
She sat up, leaning against the headboard. The blanket fell away, exposing her lovely breasts. I stared at them, then laughed as she tugged up the blanket. “Eyes up here, Mr. Vulpe.”
I smirked and met her gaze. “Not my fault you’re so beautiful.”
She shook her head. “Back to the subject at hand.”
“I know where I’d like my hand,” I retorted, wiggling my fingers and winking.
She blinked then began to laugh. I loved the sound of her amusement. Full, rich, and loud. It was at odds with her more serious persona that most people saw.
She stroked my cheek. “You make me happy.”
I captured her hand in mine and kissed the palm. “I like to hear that.” I sat up and faced her. “And I would like to hear your story. I’ve always wondered.”
She tilted her head. “I remember the first time I met you.”
“Oh?”
She nodded. “You were new to the crew. Marcus had brought you on board, and you were moving in to the building. I was coming home from my shift, and you were in the hallway talking to Damien.”
“He introduced us.”
“Yes.” She smiled, a soft, almost-shy smile that did something to my chest. “I thought you were the sexiest man I had ever seen. So tall and strong. Confident. You kissed my hand and said my name. I knew right then I was in trouble and I had to avoid you.”
“You did a good job, my love.”
“I failed, though.”
“Does that upset you?” I asked.
“No. Not really. At least, not at the moment,” she confessed.
I laughed and tapped the end of her nose. Always honest, my Sofia was. “That wasn’t the first time I’d seen you.”
“It wasn’t?”
“No. I recall the exact moment I saw you as well.”
She pulled her knees to her chest. “Tell me.”
It was off topic, but I wanted to tell her. “I had met with Marcus several times. Listened to his offer, thought it over. I was still concerned, and he asked to meet again, and this time, he brought Damien with him. He wanted us to meet and talk. Not business—he never talked about HJ in public—but on a personal level. Let me meet someone I would work closely with. We met at a small restaurant close to the hospital. You came in to get a takeout order on your way home. Damien got up to say hello to you. I saw you and was smitten. You were in your scrubs, your hair up, no makeup, and I thought you were the most beautiful woman in the world. I asked Marcus who you were, and he said you were Damien’s cousin. I was relieved because I was worried I was going to have to kill a man I had just met and quite liked.” I grinned at her. “But he was talking to the woman I had already decided would be mine. I would have to eliminate him.”
For a moment, there was no reaction. Then she laughed again.
“You are incredibly caveman-ish, Egan.”
“For you, yes. I had never experienced such intense feelings for a stranger before. You left, and Damien returned to the table. I asked him why he hadn’t introduced us, and he said he wouldn’t do that unless I was part of the team. He was very protective of you. I told Marcus I was in.”
She gaped at me. “Because of me? You agreed to be part of HJ because you wanted to meet me?”
“It was the, ah, tip of the ice cream?” I responded, then frowned. “No. The tip of the sundae.”
She chuckled. “The cherry on the sundae. The tip of the iceberg is the other saying.”
“Well, it was both. You were the deciding factor, and I knew we would have a deep connection.” I grinned at her. “I was right.”
“That was a long time ago.”
“I know. But I had to prove myself to Marcus. To Damien. I had to earn their trust before I could earn yours. And I knew from the moment I met you it was going to take a long time. You had a sadness about you, a thick wall that I had to break down. It took time, but it was worth it, iubirea mea.”
She clasped my hands, and I lifted them, kissing her knuckles.
