I look over at him and ask, “How do you know?”

His baby-blue eyes briefly meet mine. “Because I’m the Lord who was supposed to kill her.”

SIXTY-SEVEN

TYSON

Sophomore year at Barrington University

I sit on the couch. The girl lies face down on the floor, hands still tied behind her back and she’s crying around the tape on her mouth. Miles Hopper sits next to me, recording her with his cell phone. Something about material to jack off to later.

The front doors slam open. The sound of them hitting the interior walls echo through the house, and Miles jumps to his feet. I stay on the couch, arms fanned across the back.

“What the fuck are you doing here?” he demands, watching the three men enter the family room. He spins around to look at me. “What did you do, Tyson?”

I don’t answer because it’s obvious what I did. I sent a picture of the girl to her Lord. I believed the girl when she said she didn’t know anything. Her mother did, but her? I wasn’t given any information about her.

Saint removes the pocketknife from his back pocket and cuts the zip tie around her wrists and yanks her to her feet. He rips the tape from her mouth, and she sobs, wrapping her arms around his neck while she stands up on her tiptoes.

“You can’t take her,” Miles growls, then turns to face me. “We have a job to do.”

“And we did it.” I nod to the dead mother.

“She’s supposed to be dead,” Miles snaps. “Everyone in this house must be taken care of. If her brother isn’t here in thirty minutes, I’m going to fucking gut the bitch.” He turns around to face Saint but is met with the end of his knife. Saint stabs him in the neck and then pulls it out. The girl places her hands over her ears as Miles gurgles nonsense before dropping to his knees, and Kashton takes her in his arms to comfort her.

I stand and shove my hands into my front pockets. “You understand what this means?” I ask him. My eyes going to the sobbing girl. Haidyn takes her from Kashton and picks her up with his hands on her thighs. She wraps her legs around his waist and buries her face into his neck, still sobbing. I look back at Saint, waiting for an answer.

He nods, putting the bloody knife away. “I owe you.” Walking over to Haidyn, he rubs her back, and she turns, facing him, and like a child, he takes her from him and walks out the door.

“I don’t understand,” my wife whispers. “Why were you supposed to kill her?”

“Because she is Luke’s half-sister.”

She gasps, pulling her legs up underneath her ass, and turns in her seat the best she can to face me, her other hand coming to lay over our joined ones. “What…I—”

I smile at her lack of words and explain a little more. “I was sent to do an assignment for initiation. Me and a fellow Lord were supposed to take care of everyone in the house. Well, I was just as surprised as you were when I found Miles dragging Ashtyn into the living room. I knew her from the house of Lords. She was Saint’s chosen.”

“I’ve heard the rumors.” She nods, referring to Saint and Ashtyn. “What did you do?”

“I killed her mother.”

“Tyson.” She gasps in horror as if the thought of me killing a woman is too much to handle.

“You know how you get a woman to trust a man?” I ask, looking over her quickly.

Her brows pull down at my question. “No.”

“You send a woman to do the job for you.” The silence that lingers tells me she doesn’t understand, so I elaborate. “He would find a girl that he wanted, send his mother to talk to her, get close to her, then she would help him drug her and take her.”

“Oh my God.” Her hands tighten on mine.

“But there was never anything said about Ashtyn. The Lords had a description of the mother. That wasn’t a chance I wanted to take.”

“So…” She thinks about her words for a few seconds. “You knew all the way back then that Luke was involved with kidnapping and killing these women?”

“No.” I shake my head. “Luke was never mentioned.”

“But you said it was her half-brother.”

It’s complicated. “Ashtyn had a brother. The Lords thought that it was him because of the mother’s role she played.” That’s where things got tricky. For some reason, her brother didn’t come to save them that night, so who knows what the fuck he was into. After I killed their mother, the Spade brothers took Ashtyn into Carnage and hid her away from the world. But that didn’t go as planned either. She fucked them all over. There are days I bet they wish I would have just killed her when I had the chance. But if Whitney is telling the truth, they will get their chance, and Ashtyn may be dead soon anyway.
