“We need to double down on keeping him with us. If Brandon was working with his family, Trey likely has access to our location.”

The sound of a vehicle had us all turning. It was a truck towing a horse trailer.

“Shit. I didn’t think they’d get here so early.”

“Who is it?” Rhys asked.

“The guy who sold me a horse for Jacob.”

“You bought Jacob his own horse?”

“He’s always wanted one, and I have to do something with all the fucking money X is paying me.”

“Right, because you’d never just buy shit for yourself.”

TJ snorted. “Are you still going to try to pretend you aren’t in love with him?”

“What?”

“You’re in love with Jacob.”

“Yeah, I know.”

Rhys stumbled, and TJ was hit with a laughing fit.

“So you’ve changed your mind about keeping him?” Rhys asked when he’d composed himself.

“I intend to convince him to stay with me.”

“By bribing him with a horse?”

“Whatever it takes.”

“Have you tried just telling him how you feel?”

TJ huffed. “Like it’s that simple.”

Rhys rolled his eyes. “Sometimes it can be. I think it will be with Jacob.”

“I’m going to tell him, okay.”

“And you’re also giving him a horse,” my brother confirmed.

“Yes. He deserves it. He’s a natural rider.”

TJ made a strangled sound. “I don’t need that much info.”

I flipped him off. “Drive the fucking truck.” I gestured toward the vehicle he and Rhys had used. “I can’t keep this guy waiting.”

Rhys automatically went to my truck as I’d known he would. He and TJ seemed to be fighting less, but I didn’t think he would ride with the guy voluntarily.

I drove as fast as I could without putting us in major danger. Rhys clung to the grab handle the whole time.

“Jesus, you didn’t drive that fast in the marines.”

“The hell I didn’t. You never rode with me.”

“Thank God. Remind me not to do it again.”

We pulled up at the barn at the same time as the man with the trailer. I kept small talk to a minimum, and we coaxed the gorgeous mare out of the trailer and into the barn.

“She’s fucking perfect,” Rhys said when her former owner had left.

“Did you doubt my ability to pick out a horse for my man?”

“You’re ready to claim him now?”

“I have been—”

Rhys shook his head. “You were in protector mode, but you weren’t ready to admit what you actually felt.”

“I hate when you’re right.”

“You should get over that because it’s going to keep happening.”

“So you’re right about TJ?”

Rhys froze with his hand on the new horse’s flank. “Yes. Absolutely.”

“He’s evil?”

“He’s a killer, and he doesn’t belong here.”

I grinned behind my brother’s back, but I didn’t say anything else. “Do you mind hanging out to make sure Daisy’s happy here while I go get Jacob?”

Rhys rolled his eyes. “Go get your boyfriend and spoil him like you’ve been dying to.”

“I will. Don’t let your guard down. I wish this was really over, but…”

“I know. I got it.”

JACOB

After Grant left, I set the bread dough in a bowl to rise and started cleaning up the kitchen. “I’m going up to my room for a while.”

Rogue frowned, studying me for a moment. “Are you okay, like, really? What happened with Evan, that had to be—”

“I’m fine. I just hope the FBI really will get him help.”

“If Grant didn’t think they’d do the right thing, he wouldn’t let Ghost take him.”

“Are you sure? He was ready to kill Evan when he tried to attack me.”

“My brother would do anything to defend you, but he also knows Evan has been hurt and needs help. Grant can be vicious when he needs to be, but he’s kinder than he lets on.”

“I know.” I put the spray cleaner down and headed for the door.

“Do you love him?”

I stumbled and turned back to face Rogue. “Love Grant?”

“Yes. Is it so farfetched to think you would?”

“No, I… Yes, I love him.”

“Have you told him?”

I shook my head. “He’s given me so much. I don’t need to burden him with—”

“Whoa. Love isn’t a burden, or at least it doesn’t have to be.”

“It would be if Grant doesn’t feel the same way.”

“Do you think he doesn’t?”

Did I? “I don’t know.”

“What does your gut tell you?”

“That he’s the best thing that ever happened to me, and I should fight for him, but can we not talk about this now?”

Rogue smiled. “All right. Go on up. Should I tell Grant you’re waiting for him in bed?”

Heat filled my cheeks, and I flipped Rogue off even as I answered. “Yes.”

I showered, pulled on a pair of shorts, and ended up pacing the room instead of lying on the bed. Would Grant have time to talk when he got back? This was insane. Did I think I was a temptress waiting to seduce him? He knew I was his anytime and anywhere he wanted me.

A shout and a loud thump startled me. I rushed to the door. “Rogue?” No answer. “Rogue, are you okay?”
