I can barely swallow as I look at Gannon.

“You’re doing great, baby,” he says.

My lower half moves. Although I can’t feel it, I can sense it.

“Thank you for this,” he says, a tear slipping down his cheek. “Watching you go through this is unbelievable. To think you’d endure this so we can grow our family is incredible.” He presses a kiss to my cheek. “I’m in awe of you.”

“I love you,” I say, hiccupping a breath.

“My God, I love you.”

“Here we are,” Dr. Manning says just before the sweetest cry fills the room. “Congrats, Mom and Dad. Your little girl is here!”

Sobs wrack my body immediately as I listen to her, and Gannon rests his forehead against mine. Is he crying, too?

“Dad, do you want to come over and cut the cord?” a nurse offers.

“Go,” I say.

He kisses my forehead and disappears out of sight.

The nurses chatter and the doctors banter, and the sounds of tools clamor from the other side of the curtain. Numbers are read off. Things are counted. Someone claps.

Hurry up and let me see my baby.

On cue, Gannon comes around the corner with a pink bundle in his arms.

The sight of him holding our daughter breaks me. His big, strong arms holding the tiniest little bundle as if it’s the most precious thing in the world smashes into my heart. He beams, carefully lowering her to my chest.

I’ve never seen a man look prouder in my life.

“She’s perfect. Eight pounds, ten ounces. Twenty-one inches long. Time of birth is eight oh four,” a nurse rattles off.

Gannon places our daughter on my chest. “Here’s your Mommy.”

“She’s so beautiful,” I say, trying to stop crying long enough to see her.

Pink cheeks. A head full of dark hair. Dark eyes. Just like her daddy.

“Welcome to the world, Ivy June,” Gannon says.

Ivy finds Gannon’s voice and locks eyes with him.

“I’ve never seen a more beautiful baby,” I say, wishing they’d unstrap me so I could hold her.

“That’s because she has the most beautiful mommy.” He kisses her forehead, then mine. “Me and my girls.”

The way he says it warms my heart, and the sight of him bringing her to his shoulder when she starts to fuss brings tears again.

“Hey, don’t cry,” he whispers to her, swaying back and forth. “Daddy’s got you.”

He looks down at me and grins.

“I got you, too. Forever.”

“Forever,” I say, smiling right back.

This was the best merger of all time.
