By the time she hangs up, I’m practically vibrating with nervous energy. “She said to come in when the contractions get closer together,” Amelia says, her voice calm but tinged with excitement. “For now, we wait.”
“Wait?” I echo, incredulous. “What do you mean, wait?”
Her lips twitch, and she steps closer, cupping my cheek. “Relax, Fox. We’re okay.”
I lean into her touch, my pulse slowing at the steadiness in her gaze. “You sure?”
“I’m sure.” She tilts her head back, her eyes shining. “I can’t wait to watch you be a dad.”
I brush a strand of hair from her face, my fingers lingering against her cheek. “Yeah–a family, I never dreamed it.”
Her smile widens, and she leans into me, her warmth chasing away the chill of the night. “You’re not so bad at this romantic stuff after all, caveman.”
I chuckle, the sound low and rough. “Don’t let it go to your head.”
The moment stretches between us, comfortable and full, and for the first time in my life, I know I’ve found my place. My home.
“You’re stuck with me now, you know,” I say, my voice quiet but firm. “This is it for me. You’re it.”
She lifts her head, her eyes locking onto mine. “Good. Here’s to forever.”
Her kiss is soft and lingering, her lips promising everything I didn’t know I needed. As the snow falls around us and the world holds its breath, I pull her closer, knowing that whatever comes next, we’ll face it together. My sweet girl, my perfect match, my forever family. It’s her and I against the world and she’s made me the happiest caveman on this mountain.
