“Well, she tried it before.”

But that had been different. “She thought I would be alone with West. West, as I’m sure she knows, is fairly new at the bodyguard business. She intended to kill him and take me into custody. She’d planned it out. She took her time with it. Think about it.”

“Well, we know she rented the space in the building across from yours the month before,” Taylor mused. “She had to have someone waiting there every day to see if you returned. According to Joseph, she’d been planning it for a while, though he was left out until the very end.”

She rather thought Joseph had tried to be the voice of reason, and Julia wasn’t having it. “She also had the parking garage security guard in her back pocket for months before. She had several options to use, but Joseph didn’t think Sanctum was one of them.”

“But you pointed out Joseph was often left out of her plans when it came to Kyle.”

She was right. “It still feels slapped together for Julia. I’ve watched her work and while I know she can be unhinged, this plan has little chance of actually going right. There are so many ex-soldiers in this building.”

“I would suspect she intends to move on the club after hours.” Taylor expertly undid the laces of her corset. “They’ll sneak us over to The Club, and then I would bet Taggart is going to try to trap the mercenaries and see what he can get out of them.”

Something still didn’t sit right.

“Charlie? Baby, I need you to come here.”

MaeBe glanced back and the door to the locker room was open. Big Tag had pulled a T-shirt over his chest, but his legs were still covered by his leathers.

“Do you think Ian would shut down the club for the night?” Taylor asked. “I worry if he does, she’ll know we’re on to her.”

“I don’t care.” MaeBe went to her locker and pulled out her laptop. She could throw her clothes on over her fet wear if they needed to hurry. She wanted to take a look at the security cameras. She sat down on the bench and quickly had them pulled up. “I’d rather have everyone safe. If Ian’s closing us down, I trust his instincts.”

“Do you see anything that worries you?” Taylor had slipped a sweatshirt over her head that matched her leggings. “Didn’t you do a deep dive into all the real estate around here?”

“It was all fine.” After what had happened at her apartment, she’d wanted to make sure no one had recently taken up residence in one of the buildings around Sanctum. “No one’s rented any space in the three buildings that could potentially be used as sniper nests. And anyone coming from those buildings can be seen by our security cameras, so it wouldn’t be smart to launch an op from there. The only thing they could do is drive right up and start fighting. That’s why it doesn’t make sense. No sane person attacks this building. She doesn’t want attention. Not from the authorities, and a firefight is the only way to get into this building.”

Taylor took a long breath as she stared down at the computer. “Then we should consider alternatives. This could be her way of getting us out of the building, and she’ll attack the car on the way to the new location. Though it would be far easier to do that coming from the office.”

“Or she’s planning something else, and this is a complete distraction.”

Taylor sat down beside her. “All we can do is check everything fifteen times. Do you think we should cancel tomorrow’s flight?”

She wasn’t sure Kyle would allow that to happen. “I think we should talk about it. I’ve had this plan playing around in my head since I sat down with Joseph. Julia wants the intel. We don’t have the intel. She’s never seen the intel.”

She was going to continue but Charlotte chose that moment to walk by, Serena Dean-Miles following close.

“I’m going to kill that child,” Charlotte said, her face flushed. “She was grounded.”

MaeBe stood. “What’s going on? Is everyone okay?”

Charlotte stopped, and that was one mad momma. “My daughter is what’s going on. Kala, of course. Apparently she’s been sneaking out of the house to meet Cooper every Saturday when we’re here at Sanctum. She’s not allowed to leave the house, much less without one of us knowing where she’s going. And now she’s mad at Cooper, and she’s disappeared on him. They had a fight, and she didn’t go home. I swear that child is going to kill me.”

“You know how she feels about Cooper,” Serena said.

“I know that she’s gone too far this time.” Charlotte started to walk back to her locker. “And I’m the dumbest mom in the world because it’s been going on for months and I didn’t even see it. When I find her, I’m going to lock her up. She won’t see the light of day until she’s eighteen.”
