“Where are you, shadow girl?” I asked aloud, wondering if I should head back toward the estate and start looking for her. What if they got her? If they were torturing her?
The Change came out of nowhere, forking my tongue, making my horns start to press out of my skull and my wings start to slice through the skin of my back.
But as if the sound of my voice somehow reached out to her, Nox’s cloak of darkness slipped away, revealing her prone form on the ground, her dark hair spilling over her face.
My stomach clenched, thinking she was dead.
But no.
Obviously, her cloaking powers wouldn’t work if she was dead.
She was just exhausted.
I understood her desire to help her fellow man. But she couldn’t do that if she completely burned herself out, either.
“Oh, shadow girl,” I murmured, making my way toward her, lowering myself down, and very slowly pulling her up against me.
I didn’t need to be so careful, though. She was so dead tired that she didn’t even stir.
At least not until she was fully against me, covering me in that orange cream scent I found so fucking intoxicating. My heat must have been warming her up, though, because she snuggled closer and made these little mewling sounds that had my cock getting all sorts of ideas.
I knew that she would likely be pissed when she eventually woke up, going on and on about how there was no time to waste.
But things had changed now. If the gods were busy tormenting me, she didn’t have to worry about the humans. We had more time. Unless, of course, the gods got sick of toying with me.
But we could cross that bridge when we got to it.
Right now, she needed rest. I mean, if she’d gone from fully functioning to out cold so quickly, clearly her powers were taking too much from her. Maybe that was just because she was overdoing it and not taking good enough care of herself. Or, possibly, her powers were growing, and she neither realized it nor found a way to control it.
I wouldn’t pretend to be an expert on powers. Sure, I knew how upper demons like myself and my club brothers operated. And I even had a cursory understanding of lower demons and their powers.
But gods and demigods? Not in my wheelhouse.
Suddenly, I wished I had access to the club. To Ace and his endless knowledge and books. To Bael, who possibly made contact with the hot professor who specialized in the old gods. Hell, maybe even Lenore or Dale, both women with powers of their own to draw reference from.
I didn’t have my phone, though. And I damn sure didn’t have anyone’s numbers memorized.
We were on our own.
Unless I could convince Nox to go with me to get some help.
Even as I thought it, though, I knew that idea was dead in the water. She would never willingly leave this place. At least not without first finding her half-sister.
So, for the time being, we were stuck here. Running around like squirrels in traffic. No direction. No understanding of what was going on.
But at least she wasn’t alone in the mission anymore. I was pretty sure if she was, she would have gotten found by now. Not because she was careless, but because she was struggling with her power.
I knew that she would want me to wake her up. Or, if not that, to continue the search without her. But, frankly, the one thing I did seem to know about the old gods was how horny and rapey they were. If they happened upon a woman sleeping in the woods, bad things were bound to happen. Not even a relation would stop them, since they were often incestuous.
Mine the voice snarled at the idea of someone putting their hands on her.
“You’re dangerous, shadow girl,” I murmured, going ahead and letting my head rest on the top of hers, breathing in that sweet scent of hers as she slept against me, her breathing slow and deep.
It was only maybe two or three hours before her whole body jerked hard as she came awake with a start.
“What—“ she said, struggling against my hold.
“Easy, sweetness,” I said, hearing how thick my voice had gotten as my desire had slowly grown over the past few hours. And all the wiggling she was doing wasn’t helping anything either.
“Daemon?” she asked, voice slow with sleep.
“Know any other snuggling demons?”
“I don’t… I was waiting for you,” she said.
“And you fell asleep right on the ground by the tree,” I told her.
“What? No. I slept all day.”
“Seems like that wasn’t enough.”
“Why did you let me sleep?”
“Honestly, wasn’t sure I could have woken you up if I wanted to.”
“I don’t know how that happened,” she said. “I was just sitting there… then I was waking up.” There was a moment where she just sat there with that information. “That’s actually kind of scary,” she decided.
