Just as I’m reading the third claim, a message notification pops up.

Brock: Don’t go online.

Me: Too late.

Brock: Can you believe that bullshit?

Me: You mean you weren’t enjoying a five-girl orgy that night?

Brock: Fuck no. I was in bed with the woman I love that night. The orgy happened the next night. *insert winky face*

Me: *snorts laugh* That must explain why you were so tired on the flight back home. You slept soundly for an hour, like you didn’t get enough sleep the night before.

Brock: I didn’t get any sleep. I was up all night.

Me: Orgies are pretty demanding, or so I’ve heard.

Brock: *insert laughing emoji* Fuck, I love you. Thank you for being so cool about the bullshit that goes with dating me.

Me: And I love you. Don’t let the stuff online get in your head.

Brock: I should be saying that to you.

Me: We’re a team. In this together.

Brock: Hell yes, we are!

Brock: Also, Caleb thinks they’ll keep digging until they hit pay dirt. If there’s anyone you want to tell before our relationship potentially goes public, might want to do that soon.

I know he’s referring to my dad.

Brock: I can go with you to talk to him. I don’t think you should do it alone.

Me: I’ll call his assistant and see when he has some free time.

When he doesn’t reply, I set my phone down and take a few sips of coffee. I know they have meetings mixed in with their practices, so the last thing I want to do is bother him when he’s busy. His job might be to play a game, but there’s so much more than just showing up on Sunday and playing. There’s a whole new level of commitment that comes with professional sports, and Brock is one of the most committed I know.

After finishing my coffee, I grab my phone and call Marcy. I know my dad is busy today, so I decide not to even bother him with my invite.

“Richard Henderson’s office, how may I help you?”

“Hey, Marcy, it’s Joey.”

“Oh, hi, Joey! If you’re looking for your dad, he’s in a meeting right now,” she starts, always so pleasant and friendly.

“I figured he was. Actually, I was wanting to know if he has some free time coming up that I can steal a few minutes.”

I can hear her clicking on her keyboard. “Let me look. Actually, how does Saturday night sound? He was supposed to have dinner with the mayor and a few council members, but it got pushed back. I haven’t changed the reservation yet, so I still have a table reserved at Harper’s Point.”

Knowing all I have to do this weekend is sunbathe by the pool and snuggle with Brock, I accept. “That sounds fine. Was Candi going?” I ask, really hoping this wasn’t a dinner party with my stepmom.

“Actually, no. I believe Candi is out of town this weekend.”

I actually let out a sigh of relief. “Perfect.”

She doesn’t hide her laughter. “Six o’clock at Harper’s. I’ll change the reservation to two.”

“Actually, can you make it three?”

“Of course. I should have known Caleb would be attending too.”

I don’t correct her that it’ll be Brock going, not Caleb. Once she confirms the details of our dinner, I sign off. Before I can even set my phone down, it rings with a local number. “Hello?”

“Is this Josephine Henderson?” a woman asks.

“This is she.”

“Josephine, this is Francie Baxter human resources director for Premier Advertising. How are you this morning?”

My heart rate jumps up in anticipation. “I’m doing well, thank you.”

“I’m happy to hear. I’m also happy to offer you the position of junior advertising executive. After your meeting with Mr. Pascal, he insisted we make room for you with the junior team, as he felt your experience was better suited there.”

“Wow, I’m… honored. But he didn’t have to create a new position for me. I’m more than happy to start at the bottom and work my way up.”

She chuckles. “He thought you might say that. Mr. Pascal was actually considering expanding in a few areas prior to your interview. He just moved up his plans to create new positions in light of your brilliant interview.”

She goes on to lay out the details of the position, compensation, and benefits package. It’s an incredible offer, one I’d be silly to refuse. “Then you accept?”

“I do,” I reply eagerly, the biggest smile on my face.

“Excellent. You mentioned in your interview you could start soon. Is Monday too soon?”

Nothing pressing crosses my mind, except I’ll need to go to my storage unit and retrieve my professional wardrobe. “Monday is perfect.”

“Excellent. We’re so glad to have you as part of the team. Oh, before I forget, you’ll be working directly under Jennifer Gooding. She wasn’t at the interview yesterday because of a family vacation, but she is aware of the employment offer and your potential hiring. She will be your direct contact point and handle your training. Fair warning, however, she was planning a small team-building retreat next weekend. Her entire team will be off Thursday and Friday and then traveling to Lake of the Ozarks for the weekend. This is an annual event Jennifer does, and it just so happens to fall right after you start. If you’re not comfortable going, we can certainly continue your training in-house without Jennifer or the team, but I know they’d welcome your attendance if at all possible.”
