“You fucked her in the truck?” Ripper said, a big grin on his face. “I hope that was at a rest stop or something. ’Cause, yeah.”
I couldn’t keep the grin off my face. “Nope. While I don’t recommend it, I’ll definitely do it again.”
“Dude! That’s a hundred-and-twenty-five thousand dollar vehicle! Cain’s gonna kick your ass!”
“Why?” I shrugged. “No one died, the truck is in one piece, and so’s the car we were hauling. And, no one got a ticket. No harm, no foul.”
“I mean, he’s not wrong, Ripper.” Rosanna grinned before asking Jolene, “Big thumbs up on the Tesla Challenge! So… How’d you take the pictures? I mean, if you didn’t actually take the pictures?”
“Susie. I asked her if she could hack the cameras inside the vehicle and take something.” She looked up at me, her eyes wide. “But I swear, I told her to just get me. Not you. I didn’t want your face to be in the picture at all, and she promised she wouldn’t. That way you could deny it if you wanted.”
“She’s right,” Ripper said. I was sure that was more to reassure Jolene than me. “Your face wasn’t actually in the pic. Knew it was you ’cause of your tats.”
“Honey, I could give a rat’s ass if you got me or not. I’d actually prefer you did. That way those punkasses knew for sure who they were dealing with.” I wrapped her up in my arms again. “How long’d you say we had? Later tonight or tomorrow?”
“If I had to guess,” Ripper said, “I’d say they’ll come callin’ tonight.” He shrugged. “Couple hours, maybe. Once I figured out who they were and what was goin’ down, I started finding active ways to keep an eye on them. Right now, they’re holed up in a roach motel on the highway. Don’t look like they’re lookin’ to settle in for the night.”
“I didn’t want to make it difficult for you, Styx,” she said softly. “I was gonna hide outside the compound and take them out one at a time.”
“You didn’t exactly make it difficult. I mean, they’re pissants. We’ll just squash ’em. I just don’t like it that you planned on doin’ this without tellin’ me. We’re a team. Remember?”
“And how’d you get Susie to do this without tellin’ us?” Thorn asked. “She really shouldn’t have done that.”
“I might have told her I’d told Styx?” She winced, looking up at me to gauge my reaction.
I wanted to look stern but couldn’t manage it. Instead, I might have chuckled a little. “You’re gonna get your ass busted for that, little girl.”
“I -- what?”
“You heard me,” I grinned. “Gonna spank your ass till it’s red.” Then I leaned in and whispered at her ear. “Then I’m gonna fuck it.”
She shivered in my arms and let out a little giggle.
“You could use something that’s gonna correct her behavior instead of encourage it,” Thorn groused, but I could see his amusement.
“So, have I really caused you guys a bunch of trouble?” Jolene didn’t look intimidated, but anyone could tell she was contrite. Her question was sincere. “I really just wanted to take care of it myself.”
“No one here does anything by themselves,” Havoc said. “Not even Thorn. We’re a team. That means you, too.” He looked squarely at me. “Something your man there should have explained to you.”
“It’s not his fault,” she said quickly. “He told me he’d take care of it. I just wanted to… I don’t know. This is my problem. Not y’all’s or his. Didn’t wanna get nobody hurt on account’a me.”
“And you’ve already been hurt enough, baby,” I said. “Ain’t lettin’ you get hurt again.”
“Jesus, Styx,” Red muttered. “Could you sound more like you’re actually from the sticks? Where’d the fuck did that accent come from?”
“You didn’t honestly think I meant to spell my name S T Y K S, did you? Was supposed’ta be be S T I C K S for that very reason.”
Havoc barked out a laugh and Thorn chuckled. “You ain’t right, brother,” Havoc said, still laughing.
“No,” Thorn agreed. “He ain’t. Doubt anyone from the hollar is. But we all got our own brand of crazy.” He shook his head, grinning. “Now get your woman upstairs and give her a good seein’ to. You wear her out enough, we can get this done so she can wake up and it all be over and done with.”
“Don’t want that,” she said. “I realize you can’t be like Cain and give me the kill. That’s too much for any club like yours. But I still wanna be there.”
“Wait,” Havoc said. “What did you say?”
Thorn swore, looking from Jolene to me and back again. “I’m gonna have a word or three with Cain next time I see him.” His gaze finally settled on me. “Is she shittin’ me?”
