Then, because I could, I said, “Hey, Greer.”
She raised her brow at me. “Yeah.”
“Can you put your fingers in your ears for a second? I want to ask your mom something,” I said.
I’d heard it all today from Sunny, too.
Heard why Asia had done what she’d done with Herb. Heard how she’d wanted to offer Greer an insurance payout so she could have a nicer car and home. Heard also how she’d planned on making Denny, the dumbest criminal on the planet, do the breaking and entering to help with her “insurance fraud” she had going on.
Honestly, Asia had always been an enigma to me. She was a great person when she wasn’t high or drunk. She’d always loved her daughters, that I could see.
But ultimately, her heart had broken because she’d lost the love of her life.
And could I truly blame her for that? Especially now that I was in love with her daughter in the exact same way? What would I do if I lost Greer?
Fuckin’ break, that’s what.
“Sure.” She rolled her eyes, sticking her fingers in her ears.
“Hey, Asia,” I called to her mom.
Asia’s weathered brow lifted as she hiked an eyebrow up. “What?”
“Can I marry your daughter?” I asked, giving her my signature grin. The one that all the women got. The fake as hell one.
“Yes,” Asia said. “Under one condition.”
“What condition is that?” I asked curiously.
Bobblehead came for me again but tiring of his game, I took him out with a right hook to the nose. He hit the ground and didn’t stir.
“Sorry for that. What were you saying?” I asked.
Asia’s lips turned up at the corner. “I was saying, as long as you bring her to visit me in prison.”
“Oh hell yeah, I will,” I said.
“Can I take my fingers out of my ears now?” Greer asked overly loudly. “And when can I act like I didn’t hear a thing y’all said? Because I’m super excited over here.”
I grinned. “So what do you say?” I asked, moving toward the bars that separated us.
“This is touching,” I heard Cassidy say. “But I need to take him back to the office.”
The bars behind me opened, and I ignored them.
Bobblehead was gone, but my girl was right there.
“So?” I said. “Will you?”
“You didn’t ask me anything,” she teased, her fingers wrapping around the bars just under her chin.
I caught her hair and pulled her until her face was pressed against the bars. Then said, “Will you marry me?”
“Yes,” she answered. “But only if you promise to never stop giving me hell. Because that’s one of the best parts of my day.”
I grinned wickedly at her. “I wouldn’t have it any other way, baby. The best sex comes from when you get so irritated with me you want to kill me.”
“Too much information,” I heard from the other woman, the random one I had seen holding cards. “Do you have any sixes?”
“Go fish,” Asia ordered.
Greer laughed against my lips.
“Do y’all want to get out of here or what?” Sunny asked. “I have to go take my girl on a first date.”
I laughed against Greer’s lips, then pulled back. “Let’s go home. I’ll bet Sara and Carrie are freaking out.”
Ten minutes later, we were in my kitchen and Sunny was explaining everything, from start to finish, to everyone in the room. And the room had filled. All of my brothers were there, as well as their wives. Finn was there. Carrie. Our night nurse who I had a feeling was hot for Finn.
“So, recap,” Folsom said as she flicked up a single finger. “One, Greer’s mom didn’t actually steal her car, per se. She ‘stole’ it, returned it, but only so Greer could claim insurance and have it fixed. Possibly totaled. Correct?”
Sunny nodded.
“Two.” She held up a second finger. “She then orchestrated a nonviolent criminal, one who would only go over when Greer wasn’t home, to tear the walls of her house down. Only after she’d filled it with fake ‘drugs.’ Which she then could also claim on insurance.”
Sunny sighed but nodded.
“Three, she then wanted to go to Greer’s boss and suggest a pay raise, and instead found that her boss had been selling photos of her online for people to see. Possibly videos as well.” She frowned. “That’s something that I’ll get on as soon as I get to my big computer.” She shook her head. “Anyway, when she found out that her boss was a freakin’ creep, she murdered him. Stabbing him eight times with a letter opener.”
Sunny pinched the bridge of his nose. “This isn’t for public consumption yet. You can’t repeat any of this. But yes.”
Sara placed her hand on his shoulder, and I smiled. Yeah, that was definitely going somewhere.
“Four, Denny, thinking he’s playing it smart, has a deputy call his cousin Matt, who’s an FBI agent. And thinking it would make his career, he tried to take over the case. And instead, only ended up getting himself in trouble when Sunny went to the big boss about him,” Folsom said.
