Each breath comes with the quietest of sighs that lilt at the end, a gentle appreciation of the satisfaction we find in each other. I kiss her cheek and then the other, whispering her name in reverence. “Catalina. Catalina. Catalina.” And then travel to her mouth, our lips embracing. I close my eyes and fall deeper in love with her. “I love you, my wife.”

Her eyes glisten, and water pools at the far corners. When one tear falls, I dip my tongue to catch it, and like every other thing I’ve taken from her, I drink her in, enchanted by this woman. Bewitched by my wife.

“Ah,” she moans, her back arching as her mouth falls open. When her body erupts in ecstasy this time, she takes me with her.

I pump and thrust, losing myself and my rhythm when I reach the edge and descend with her into the darkness and the bliss of us. Her body trembles as my name tumbles from her lips. The urge to fuck through my orgasm has me pushing twice as hard, making sure she feels every inch as her body swallows me whole.

I collapse on top of her, my breath heavy against her neck. When I open my eyes, I catch another tear falling down her cheek, but she’s smiling, giving me relief. It was so good to me that I couldn’t bear that I hadn’t made her feel the same.

Sucking a jagged breath, she wraps her arms so tightly around me, kisses my shoulder, and then says, “You’re killing me.” A stilted laugh follows, but the smile never leaves.

“You’re killing me, too. So fucking amazing, babe.”

“No,” she gasps, pressing against my arms. “I can’t breathe.”

“Oh shit!” Rolling off her, I kiss her heaving chest. “Sorry. I didn’t realize.”

“It’s okay. I didn’t want you to, but the best sex of my life was flashing before my eyes just before my last breath.”

“Okay. Okay,” I say, laughing lightly. “Do not lie on top of Cat. Stored in memory forever.”

“Let’s not get carried away. I liked it for a minute.”

“Until the lack of air part. Based on that alone, I’ll concede to one minute.” And to loving this woman endlessly. “As for the best sex of your life—”

“Shane Faris. Hands down.”

I pop my imaginary collar. “That’s what I like to hear.”

“I know, but it’s also true.” She wiggles her shoulders while turning to look at me. Slipping the back of her hand over my abs, she says, “That wasn’t on the schedule.”

I chuckle. God, this feels good, too. It’s not the same as being inside her, but it’s still freeing. “I need to print a new one for tomorrow. My wife is a goddamn goddess, and I’m going to need the remaining thirty-six hours to worship every inch of her.”

“I like this plan.” She snuggles against my side, propping her leg over mine. “A lot.”

“I like you a lot.” I hold her in my arms, our hearts still racing against time, and kiss the top of her head. “Extortion was the best idea I ever fucking had.”

Her body rattles with laughter. “It seems to have worked out well for you.”

“Like you, babe. Best I ever had.”

I stare at the bottom of the empty pharmacy bag, and my gaze pivots to the prescription prenatal vitamins on the counter. “This isn’t mine,” I whisper as if needing to verify I’m seeing what’s right in front of my eyes.

Taking a breath doesn’t help calm the anxiety riddling through my brain, though. So I hold the bag to my mouth and breathe in and out. In and out. In. Out. But it’s not going to solve my problem.

I jump up from the toilet and run into the bedroom, grabbing the tote bag and plopping it on the mattress. It’s packed full, so I start to unload it, tossing my purse, the book I had planned to read this weekend, the brush I haven’t used once since arriving, and the empty water bottle on the bed.

Hair clip.

Perfume.

Bag of Cheetos to help my monthly cravings that hit out of nowhere.

Gum.

Ah!

I fish my pill container from the bottom of the tote, eagerly opening it in hopes that I imagined destroying the packet two days ago instead of it really happening. Fresh from the shower with slippery hands is not a good combination for a foil packet when you bust multiple pills out accidentally while trying to catch it. Me and hazy pre-coffee mornings don’t mix.

The new prescription wasn’t just backup.

Clicking it open, I stare at the empty plastic container, my heart instantly sinking to the pit of my stomach.

All I needed was one active pill to bridge the gap until I could retrieve my correct prescription. Just one . . . But there are none. Okay, don’t freak out, Cate. I took it yesterday, so I’ll just get it transferred to Deer Lake, and I’ll be fine. A good plan is in place. It’ll be okay.
