SUNNY

“I’m coming with you!”

“You can’t,” I said.

Bane and I emptied half his stash of weapons and ammo. Liam and River were silent figures impatiently waiting at the door.

“One night throwing punches at Bane doesn’t make you a fighter, Sienna. You’ll slow us down.”

“We’re talking about my sister and my niece!”

“We’ll get her back.” Bane clipped his gun in his holster. “Coates’s phone just turned on. We’ve pinged his location to an old office building in a shipyard outside North Quay. We’ll get them both back—safe. Trust us.”

“I can’t just sit here,” she sobbed. “What if I have another vision? What if it’s a trap?”

Bane grasped her shoulders, gently moving her to the side. “We know what we’re doing. Keep your phone on. We’ll call you in an hour when we’re all driving back safe and sound. One hour, Sienna. Time me.”

Her lips trembled. Everything in her screamed to save her family, but she ran at that blast and felt the fire singe her skin. The kind of enemy we were dealing with wasn’t one she was prepared to face.

“One hour,” she said, pinning us through. “Or I come after you and get them myself.”

I strapped the last knife to my belt. “Let’s go.”

The four of us marched out of the apartment—air crackling around us.

Coates was a new hire. Put on the payroll when Sienna and Kenzie moved in at Thatcher’s request that we hire more people instead of spreading security thinner. Was he working for Grant the whole time, or did the waste of skin snatch up a bribe at the first opportunity? Whatever it was, he kidnapped my girls from what should’ve been the safest place in the city—their home.

“Coates doesn’t live to see morning.”

Bane punched the elevator button. “Like that needs to be said. The alternative was never a fucking option.”

“Dear uncle,” I said, “you can go now. We’ve got it from here.”

“Another thing that didn’t need to be said, because it’s not happening.” River shoved in ahead. “You all know this is a trap, right? They took Kenzie and Laurel to make you go inside the next building they blow up.”

“Yes, we know.” Liam’s tone was even. “Grant has obviously given up on subtlety.”

“He’ll be expecting the three of you. He won’t expect me.” River spun me around, making me face him. “The only thing that matters is getting them back.”

The three of us traded looks. I trusted a car thief with Masie’s keys more than I trusted River, but this was for Kenzie and Laurel—and the look in his eyes when he spoke about them was the same as mine.

“They won’t be expecting him,” Bane said. “It’s a tactical advantage, and we can’t turn those down right now.”

“Whoever wants to tag along, can,” I said. “Fuck an hour, we’re getting our girls back in thirty minutes. Coates is dead in thirty-five. I lead.”

Neither Bane, Liam, or River argued with me.

“What’s your plan?” Liam asked.

I took out my phone, fingers dialing mid-answer. “One phone call. That’s all it takes.”

We rushed out the doors, blowing past Thatcher and his shouts for us to wait. I trusted the man absolutely, but I no longer trusted the men standing behind him.

“Stay with them,” I ordered over my shoulder. “Every guard on staff tonight. We don’t know if Coates had an accomplice. If anyone of them touches their phone to call their mommas, break their fingers. Gates does not know we’re coming.”

Thatcher nodded. “If there is another traitor in our midst, they’ll be found by the end of the night.”

Masie was off being repaired. That left her brother, my Range Rover Sentinel, to carry us to the outskirts of North Quay. Coates’s GPS location piped directly to my phone, showing he was in the same place, not moving.

We rolled past the entrance to the shipyard, seeing the building clear through the fence. There were no men or guards posted outside. They wanted us to come right in.

“You know what to do.” I killed the engine behind a shipping container, shielding the car from view. “If one of us reaches the girls first, get them out whatever happens. There might be another bomb.”

We filed out of the car, splitting apart almost immediately. Bane went to the far side of the office. Liam went around the back while I approached the door. I didn’t see where River went.

Scanning the ground, I spotted a rock nestled within overgrown weeds. I flung it at the door, its thud alerting everyone inside. Actually, my shout did that.

“Hey! I know you’re in there, Coates!” I crept away from the entrance. “Come out now and—”

Gunfire opened on the door, shooting the knob clear off the wood—riddling it with holes. They didn’t let up for a solid ten seconds, making sure whoever stood on that blue welcome mat was mist.
