“I’ve got you.”

“I know.” Lucy peers around the ballroom.

It’s a holiday party to raise money to buy toys for foster kids. I have always been generous with my money because there’s no reason not to be. I’m not out buying yachts and private planes. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve taken my woman on both around the world for our honeymoon, but we’re simple people. To be honest, we’re more homebodies than anything else.

Lucy has always been family-oriented, and she made me crave having one. That's why we decided to build a larger home next to her old one. It allows us to maintain close ties with her brother and his wife. That is the life we both desire, but my love has started to dip her toes into charity work now that the twins are older. Both sets.

“I don’t see my brother, do you?”

If I know her brother, he’s got his wife hidden away in a corner, fucking her. I’m not opposed to the same idea, but I know Lucy will want to say a few hellos before I ruin her hair and makeup.

"I'm sure he's around." His wife, Mia, helped Lucy set up this event. Mia and I both had difficult childhoods, and she was eager to participate in the event with my wife. Lucy and Mia have grown close, and it’s nice to see how easily the four of us have gotten along. Lucy's brother and I get each other. He’s straightforward and harbors an unhealthy obsession with his wife.

"Oh, there's Mia." I follow where Lucy is pointing, and when I see Mia, I notice Nolan isn't with her. That's strange. Lucy tries to wiggle free of my hold, and I lift a brow. "It's ten feet," she tells me, but I think it's more like twenty. "Get me a glass of champagne."

"You're going to get it later," I warn before reluctantly releasing my grip on her.

"I better." She winks at me.

"And don't move your gorgeous ass from that spot, love." A few people turn around in response to my comment, and Lucy's eyes widen. God, I love when her cheeks flush. "You heard me." I shrug, not giving a shit. She rolls her eyes but makes her way over to Mia. I don't move from my spot until she's next to her.

When a few people stop me on my way to the bar, I try not to let my irritation show. I don’t want to come off as a complete ass. Not at an event that my wife had a big part in putting together and where there are a fair amount of people from her town. But I’ve gotten good at keeping things short so that I can move it along.

I snag two glasses of champagne before I head back to my wife. When I see someone next to her, I bite back a growl. Some fucker in a suit is too close to my Lucy. Who is this dipshit?

“Hey.” Nolan appears next to me.

“Your wife’s over there,” I tell him, nodding in the direction I’m headed.

“I know where my wife is. She’s been naughty, and I’m letting her think she got the jump on me.” I grunt, not giving a shit about that right now. “Hold up.” He steps in front of me.

“What the fuck?” I clip. No way Nolan missed the asshat talking to my wife.

“That’s why I’m stopping you. That's Mitch.” The champagne stems snap in my hands before hitting the floor.

“The fucker from high school?” Even as I ask, Mitch turns so I can see his face, confirming it is him.

I knew the story about Mitch and how he embarrassed my girl. Of course I did. I know everything about my wife. After I’d found out the story, I tracked the asshole down.

I made his life hell for a few years. It got so bad he upped and moved to the other side of the planet. I let it go after that. Lucy never knew about any of it. My wife might let me do dirty things to her, but she’s still innocently sweet. She would have let me play with him maybe once or twice, but I wanted more than that. And I got it. Looks like Mitch hasn’t had enough and has come back for more. Which I’ll be happy to serve him.

“Don’t kill him. Mia is really looking forward to Christmas. She’s been planning this dinner for weeks. You going to jail will put a wrench in that.”

“Fine,” I grit out and take another breath before stepping over the broken champagne glasses.

When I’m almost to my wife, I see her throw back her head and laugh. Mia glances around, shifting on her feet like she feels awkward and wants to be anywhere but where she is right now. As for Mitch, his face is flustered, turning fully red.
