The women see me comin’

That silver truck of lovin’

That no one can deny

They need a red-hot hero

Not a poser or a zero

Deputy desire

You know I’m your live wire

Of fun . . .

Red Hot Jackson

Get your 911 of fun

And I’ll let you hold my gun

Because I’m . . .

Red Hot Jackson

There was dead silence in the Floating Hat and then a burst of laughter from everyone inside. Even Hannah laughed as Jonas came out from the back room.

“What the hell is that ruckus?”

“I think your deputy is looking for attention,” Keys said, tapping the beat on the tabletop with his palms.

Jonas listened as the words and music repeated themselves, growing even louder. Jackson’s silver truck came into view, slipping into the parking slot right in front of the shop. Several shop owners and their customers stepped out of their stores to see what the commotion was all about. They began to tap their feet to the beat or clap their hands. Jackson shut off the engine and the song stopped playing abruptly. He jumped out, slamming the door.

“Uh-oh. He’s armed,” Jonas warned. “He looks pissed.”

“You’re the sheriff,” Czar pointed out. “Why would he be pissed?”

Jackson ignored the hats swinging as if a seismic event had taken place as he stalked through the door and straight up the aisle to stand in front of Savage. “A man’s truck is sacred,” he announced.

Savage nodded. “I agree. Just like my bike. No one touches it.”

“You put your hands on my truck.”

Savage put his hands in the air, palms out in surrender. “I didn’t.”

“I recognize the voices, Savage. Seychelle. Even Blythe.” Jackson pinned her with an accusing gaze. “I never would have thought you would be involved in something like this.”

“I’ll admit I sang the song—several times. It’s so catchy,” Blythe said. “Rashad was there, and we were all . . . drinking and it was just fun. Your truck wasn’t anywhere near the place.”

Sabelia all but danced around. “Do you mean to say someone actually rigged your truck to play that song?”

“Not even through my radio. When I step on the gas, it starts to play and gets louder and louder until I hit about twenty miles an hour. That ensures when I’m in town it plays where everyone can hear it. If I’m at a stop sign, it plays.”

Sabelia clapped her hands together. “That’s better than toads. I have to learn how to do that.”

“Oh, hell no,” Preacher protested, throwing both arms out in front of her, blocking her view of Jackson and Savage as if that would stop her from learning anything that had been done. “This little hellion would unleash some unholy power by mistake.”

“What’s a hellion, Mom?” Jimmy asked.

“I’m not exactly sure, Jimmy,” Blythe said. “Preacher will have to explain that one to you.”

All eyes and ears were on Preacher. He didn’t hesitate; he indicated Sabelia with her glossy black hair that all but overpowered her delicate pale features and too-large eyes for her small oval face. “Right there. A wild thing, Jimmy. A woman so attractive she lures you in and then—bam—she knocks you on your ass when you least expect it because she’s doing some crazy thing she shouldn’t be doing. Pure trouble. That’s what a hellion is. Always getting into trouble. Always will be trouble. Lives for it.”

Jimmy turned his wide blue gaze on Sabelia as if seeing her for the first time. He looked at her very admiringly.

“Get rid of it, Savage,” Jackson demanded.

“I wouldn’t know how.” Savage was complacent, sprawling back in his chair as if he didn’t have a care in the world.

Ambrie thought he looked like a wolf.

Jackson pulled out his cell phone and began rapidly texting. Inez’s phone began to sing. He glanced up at Savage, satisfaction on his face. “You’re going to be very, very sorry that you ever decided to mess with me.”

Savage raised an eyebrow. “I never touched that truck.”

“Where’re Mechanic and Transporter?”

“I imagine they’re hard at work,” Keys answered for Savage.

Jackson looked around until he spotted Jonas, who hastily wiped a grin from his face. “I’ll need a ride.”

“Sure.” Jonas kissed Hannah on her temple. “I’ll be back in a few minutes.”

Jackson paused beside Master, who had stepped to one side to allow the two lawmen to move past him. “I know you’re probably armed most of the time, but I’m warning you ahead of time, I’ll be stopping any Torpedo Ink member for any infraction. You’re a felon. That means I can search you and your vehicle. Don’t have any weapons on you.”

Savage scowled at him. “You don’t get to use your position to retaliate when you don’t like the way you get pranked, Jackson.”

“That’s beneath you,” Czar said, standing, signaling to Blythe that they were leaving as well. She held out her hand to Jimmy.

“I have to agree,” Jonas said. “You two started these ridiculous pranks. You keep them as gentlemen rules.”
