Thank goodness she hadn’t let Sev apply the one that was supposed to go between her legs, she thought as she pulled the white dress over her head. If she had, she would have been forced to deal with the same kind of stimulation teasing her clit and that was more than she could handle right now!
“Hey, baby girl, what’s wrong?” Sev had finally poked his head out from under the covers. He was blinking his golden eyes at her, his horns poking up and making a tent of sorts out of the white sheets.
He looks like a sleepy devil, Mia thought and then remembered how horrified her mother had been when she’d sent a picture of her partner after she and Sev had first been paired together on the HKR squad.
“He looks like Satan—that’s Satan sent to tempt you!” her mother had declared during a hysterical phone call.
“Mom, don’t be ridiculous—he’s an alien. That’s just how his kind of Kindred look,” Mia had protested.
She’d had a harder time defending Sev the next time her mother called, after Michael had gone running to her family to report that Mia was divorcing him. Both her mother and her step-father—who Mia didn’t speak to—had tried calling and texting her.
“Can’t you see that the Devil himself is breaking up your marriage?” had read the text from her step-father. “This is Hell’s own plot to ruin your happy home!”
There had been a lot more in a similar vein, most of it having to do with how Mia needed to quit the police force and come home at once to beg forgiveness and be a good, stay-at-home wife which was all that women were fit for.
Mia had deleted the texts and refused to take any more calls from her family. She’d tried explaining to them that Sev was just her friend and partner and nothing more, but none of them would believe her.
Now she wondered if they’d been right.
Did I secretly want him all this time? she asked herself. But no—she hadn’t had any sexual feelings at all when she’d first met the big Kindred. In fact, she hadn’t had any sexual feelings since that time when…
She put a lid on the memory fast. The point was, she’d been practically asexual for the past decade or more and then something here at this place had woken her body up. Was it Sev? But his touch had never turned her on before. She’d always thought that he smelled nice and she liked being near him, but she hadn’t had the urge to have any kind of sexual contact with him before the two of them had come here…had she?
“Mia, what are you thinking?” Sev was sitting up in bed, looking more alert now…and also more guarded, Mia thought.
“I’m thinking last night was a mistake,” she said tightly. “We really shouldn’t have done…the things we did,” she ended lamely, not wanting to elaborate.
“I was afraid you’d think that.” Sev sighed and ran a hand over his horns. “Let me remind you that we were just doing what the Elders expected.”
“We could have pretended to do what they expected,” Mia snapped. “Instead of actually doing everything that we did.”
Sev sighed again.
“What are you upset about? That I spanked you? That I shaved you? That I went down on you and tasted your pussy?”
Mia felt like she might die of shame. But at the same time, a shiver of desire so strong it shook her whole body ran through her. The two conflicting emotions were extremely confusing.
“Look, can we please just not talk about it?” she asked, glaring at him as she straightened her dress. “It would be better if we just forgot about it—all of it—and at least tried to get back to our professional relationship.”
“So that’s it? You’re just deciding for both of us?” Sev demanded.
His eyes had begun to glow and Mia could see he was really upset. She remembered suddenly that he had admitted the night before that he’d wanted her from the first moment he saw her. For Sev, this wasn’t a random hookup or a single one-night occurrence—this was the culmination of years of desire and here she was, shooting him down.
Mia felt another dagger of guilt stab her in the guts. But she couldn’t carry on with her partner like this! It was wrong and unprofessional and shameful! She just couldn’t do it!
“I’m sorry, Sev,” she said stiffly, beginning to braid her hair. “But we just can’t do this. We have to work together—we’re supposed to be working now! We didn’t come here to…to do the things we did last night, you know.”
“I know that, but the fact is we did do them.” Sev got out of bed and Mia was unnerved to see that he was completely naked. Not only that, but she could see his shaft completely—(she had only seen part of it the night before.)
