Hm.
A sheikh who also happens to be a doctor?
Now, wouldn't that be yummy?
Not yummy of course as my doctor, and oh my God, did I really just call Dr. Somebody as mine right now?
Who knew I could be this possessive when in love?
The thought makes me want to cringe and smile giddily at the same time, and I'm still trying to make sense of my feelings by the time I finally reach Dr. Adam Al-Masri's clinic.
I knock on the door before letting myself in. "Um, hi?"
The girl behind the desk glances up, and I'm startled to find that she's only a couple of years older. "Hi there."
I tell her the same thing I've told the receptionist at the lobby, and the older girl looks at me apologetically. "I'm so sorry, but Dr. Al-Masri is on vacation."
"Oh."
"But if you leave me your contact information, I'll let him know about your visit, and maybe we can schedule another appointment once he's back?"
"Um, sure."
It takes only a couple of minutes to give her my contact details, and I take my phone out as soon as I leave Dr. Al-Masri's clinic.
Please, please, please let there be a new message from him.
But when I switch my phone on, my SFI inbox is still empty, and my shoulders slump.
Oh well.
I obviously can't be mad about this, but I do miss him so, and—-
Ouch.
I think I must've walked straight into a wall, but when I glance up, the first thing I see is a pair of familiar green eyes.
"D-Doctor Somebody?"
Twenty-Two
Adam didn't want to think his Temptation had anything similar with Ilona, but the way she was now feigning surprise upon seeing him just smacked of guilt.
Even so, he forced himself to smile and strove hard not to jump to any conclusions.
"Hello, Temptation."
Her cheeks turned pink, but Adam was no longer certain whether her blushes were genuine or not.
"So..." It was a struggle to keep his voice even. "How exactly did you find me?"
She shook her head with a laugh. "But I didn't."
He could see that she was expecting him to laugh or at least smile with her, but how the hell could he do that when she was fucking killing him with her lies?
He had known she was more of a thorn than a rose, but she was supposed to be a thorn that didn't fucking lie.
So why the hell was she breaking his heart by lying?
"I'm here to meet this other doctor—-"
"Enough." He didn't want to hear another word from her, ever.
She reared back at the abruptness of his tone. "D-Doctor?"
"I never want to see you again after this."
"E-Excuse me?"
"You heard me."
"I don't understand. What's wrong?" She tried reaching for him, but Adam swiftly stepped back, and her face paled.
"Just fucking leave," Adam said tonelessly, "before I call security on you."
Her eyes started to tear, but he hardened his heart against it and forced himself to walk away.
Damn her.
Damn her.
Damn her.
"Where have you been?" Joelle asked as he entered his clinic. "Someone came by looking for you—-"
"Forget about her," he said curtly.
His cousin blinked at him in surprise. "Really? I rather thought you'd want to talk to her, since her sister is a friend of Nik Alexandropoulos."
Adam's gaze whipped back to his cousin. "What the hell does Nik have to do with her?"
Joelle checked her files to make sure she got the names right. "The patient's name is Iolanthe Raptis, and the one who came by is her sister Leah."
Adam suddenly remembered his last conversation with Nik.
It will be her younger sister who's scheduled to meet with you...
Leah, that's Io's sister, seems under stress lately...
Adam ran out of his clinic, but he was too late.
She was gone.
Twenty-Three
A grim-faced Nik and worried-looking Daria are already waiting for me on the main deck when I come aboard their yacht with tears still running down my cheeks.
Oh, Lou.
I should've known there was a reason Nik's driver didn't ask me any questions when he heard me bawling in the backseat.
"What happened?"
My heart sinks upon hearing the billionaire's dangerously soft tone. It would have been so much better if he was shouting, since that means I still have a shot at defusing his temper.
But now?
I look at Daria in silent appeal. Help?
Nik's wife gently touches his arm. "Leah will tell us if she's ready."
His jaw clenches. "Just tell me one thing."
My heart threatens to stop beating. Oh God. Is it possible he already knows about Adam and me?
"Does this have anything to do with your headaches?"
Daria looks at him in shock. "What headaches are you talking about?"
But Nik still hasn't taken his gaze off me. "Tell me the truth, Leah. Are you sick? Did Adam tell you—-"
I'm horrified all at once, and I quickly shake my head when I realize where his words are leading. "No, it's nothing like that."
But now I'm also crying harder because I realize too late how wrong I've been all this time, to think I was the only one with fears and worries.
