Chapter Eight
Brix
Something weird is happening, and I’m not sure if it cements my suspicions or squashes them.
In public, walking the red carpet and smiling, Harley and Evah make the perfect couple. They’re both these stunningly attractive people, and a chemistry I haven’t seen between them before sparkles in their eyes. It’s as if they’re putting a spell on each other and the crowd watching them.
While their interactions at home have been warm, it feels like there’s only friendship between them.
The spark right now is unmistakable, but I have to wonder if it’s all for show.
We enter the event room that has 4Evah in big letters everywhere.
Even though this is Evah’s night, everyone swarms toward Harley.
Like at the party we went to last night, Harley is charming and smiles brightly.
He’s captivating.
That’s probably part of the Eleven charm. He was no doubt coached to be like that in public.
Harley catches my gaze, and as we lock eyes, he reaches for something. I think he’s going for his ear and wants to be rescued, but no. His arm wraps around Evah, and he pulls her closer to him. I don’t know why I’m disappointed he doesn’t need me.
He turns his head to kiss the top of her hair, and I can practically see the women they’re standing with let out a collective “Aww.”
I watch them all night—for security reasons, of course—but the more I watch, the more determined Harley seems to prove something to me. Or maybe to the public.
The first thing he does when we all file back into the limo is hold out his hand for me to give him hand sanitizer.
“You know, overusing this stuff will give you cancer,” I say.
“Those studies have never been proven. Everything seems to give you cancer these days. I’ll take the risk.”
Evah and Harley go back to their usual friendly selves on the ride home, losing that spark they fake so well.
Yet, when we get home and I check his room to give him his ridiculous “All clear,” I have more solid evidence that I’m reading into things.
Instead of Evah going to her room, Harley drags her into his.
And the look he gives me as he shuts the door behind him? Yeah, there’s no question about what they’re doing in there.
I try not to hate that.
Which is ridiculous. She’s his fiancée. They’re getting married. I’ve known that from the beginning.
Harley’s right. I shouldn’t believe what I read online. I also shouldn’t be disappointed their relationship is real.
My feet take me toward my room, but I pause at the door. There’s no way I’m gonna be able to sleep, knowing what they’re doing in there.
I tell myself it’s because it’s been so long since I’ve had sex I’m jealous I’m not getting any.
Yup, sure, let’s go with that lie.
Instead of trying to go to sleep, I change out of my monkey suit and into a pair of running shorts and a tank top. I checked the newly installed security cameras in the limo on the way home, but I’ll still do an in-person perimeter check. Then I’ll head to the basement to hopefully sweat out the crappy emotions trying to take hold.
The side fence is lower than it should be, and anyone could easily jump it—just like the guy who broke in did.
A security alert would’ve been sent to my phone if the cameras picked up any movement, but sometimes technology can be a bitch. Excuse my lack of trust in it when I’ve seen guys get their legs blown off by IEDs while holding detection devices.
Only a few minutes have passed since I left Harley’s room, got dressed, and headed outside, yet, I definitely know Evah’s bedroom light was off when we arrived home.
Which makes me wonder …
I almost make a run for my room to collect my gun in case there’s an intruder again, but if my suspicions are correct, no one is in there but Evah herself.
And before I can turn and make my way back to check it out, a figure appears in the window.
It’s definitely Evah.
In her room.
Not in Harley’s.
A wide smile spreads across my face. I’m right about them. I feel it in my gut.
I refuse to think about why that makes me so happy.
As much as I’d love to go gloat to Harley about knowing it’s all fake, I have to realize there’s a reason he hasn’t told me. He’s not letting me in yet. Not fully.
And what’s a bodyguard without trust?
I’m gonna make Harley tell me himself when he thinks the time is right.
But first, I’m gonna tell Evah that it’s safer if she closes her curtains at night.
I’m sipping my morning coffee when Harley makes an appearance in the kitchen.
He looks his usual self, all bright-eyed and annoyingly handsome.
“Long night?” I try not to smirk behind my coffee cup.
