“Are you thinking about her?” comes Ranger’s voice.
I jolt. My business partner doesn’t even look up from where he’s jotting some notes in a file.
“I am,” I admit ruefully. “It’s weird. She’s only been gone since this morning, but I miss her already.”
“I know,” he nods. “Me too. God, I could use a taste of that curvy body right now. Mmm, she’s been getting sweeter between the legs too, don’t you think?”
It’s true. We’ve been encouraging her to eat more healthfully, and her female nectar has been changing as a result. She was always delicious to me, but now even more so. I nod.
“God, I miss her. I want her back,” I say in no uncertain terms.
“Yeah, me too,” says Ranger. But then he turns to me.
“Bro, do you think it’s weird that she’s never introduced us to her son?”
I pause, looking straight ahead. The truth is that I do think it’s weird, but at the same time, it’s understandable. I mean, we only met her about six months ago, and within that time we’ve gone from total strangers to having Bethie practically running our lives.
“Yeah, I do think it’s strange, but I’m sure it’ll happen,” is my growl. “I mean, we definitely hear a lot about Danny.”
“Yeah,” muses Ranger. “Do you think she tells him about us?”
That’s a difficult question to answer.
“I don’t know,” I say slowly. “I mean, what would she say? These are Mommy’s bosses? I guess that could be okay,” I say dubiously.
But Ranger shakes his head.
“No, man. Do you think she tells him that she’s dating us? Two men?”
I shrug.
“Could be. After all, he’s only two. He probably doesn’t even understand. I’d be happy if she said we were her friends, and just left it at that.”
Ranger rubs his jaw, the dark stubble giving off a slight rasp.
“That’s the thing. I want to be a dad. I want to have kids. I want to have the whole happy family thing, and I think Bethany could be the answer. But she won’t even introduce us to her son, so are we at a no-go here?”
I hold up my hands, palms out and chuckle.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa, where is this coming from? We just met the girl, Ranger. Six months ago, in fact.”
He’s not thrown off at all.
“I know,” he says seriously, those blue eyes intense. “But when you know, you know. And let’s face it Ryder. We’re not exactly spring chickens anymore. We’re in our forties. It’s not going to take years and years of dating for us to find the right woman because when you feel it, you recognize it for what it is, and I feel it with Bethany. I want to get more serious with her, and I want to talk with her about potentially having our baby.”
There it is. A baby.
Holy shit.
Are we ready for this?
But deep in my heart, I already know the answer. Bethany is everything we’ve been looking for. She accepts us as the people who we are. Imperfect, cocky, arrogant, and sometimes godawful pains in the ass. Ranger and I aren’t always the easiest guys to be around, but she’s okay with that. She softens our edges, and brings out the best in both of us.
There’s that phrase again. Both of us. She’s good at handling two men, not just in bed but also emotionally. Sure, Bethany’s a pro at taking two dicks simultaneously now, and our time between the sheets is mind-blowing to say the least. But it’s more than that. Bethany is the balance to our dark souls, and there’s a happiness and light to her that matches our data-driven personalities. Not that she’s a slacker when it comes to numbers either. She continually amazes us with her ability to manage the financial aspect of our business, all the while demonstrating soft skills and high emotional IQ.
So I already know the answer. This woman is amazing, and we’d be fools to let her go. In fact, we’d be fools to let one more night go by without trying to get her pregnant because she’s that special. We’d be honored to be fathers to her child, but that’s the thing: why hasn’t she introduced us to Danny yet? After all, our lives are so tangled now, and yet this one important strand is still kept in isolation.
“I know,” I muse, staring intently at my business partner. “It is weird, isn’t it? I want to start a family too, and I think Bethany could be the right woman as well. But given that we haven’t even met Danny, it might be premature to have that conversation with her.”
He grunts.
“No conversation needed,” Ranger says. “We’ll just come in her without protection, over and over again.”
I wince a little.
“Yo, you know the answer to that. We haven’t been using protection,” I remind him. “Most of the time we forget, so she could be knocked up already.”
