Sky’lar gave him a level look.

“We need to talk.”

Uh-oh…it looked like the moment of reckoning was at hand.

“All right.” Torin shifted in his seat uncomfortably. “So talk.”

She raised her eyebrows, her pale blue eyes flashing.

“What was the deal with what happened at the Yonnite Party?”

Torin took a deep breath.

“To be completely honest…I don’t fucking know,” he admitted. “I know I was just supposed to kiss your panties but when I smelled your scent…” He shook his head. “I guess I just…lost it. All I could think of was making you come.”

“Well, you certainly accomplished that.” Sky’lar was blushing but she kept on giving him that look. “I just don’t understand why you couldn’t stick with the script!”

“I don’t either!” Torin ran a hand through his hair. “Maybe it’s because you’ve got Kindred blood and I smelled your desire and reacted to it.”

“Who said I ‘desired’ you to do…what you did? To taste me until I came in front of everyone?” Sky’lar demanded. “You really crossed a line, Giant!”

“I know,” Torin admitted. He felt bad—he’d never done anything to a female that she didn’t want done before. “My only defense is that I was acting on instinct,” he said. “You just smelled so hot…so fucking needy. It flipped some kind of primal switch in my brain.”

Sky blushed harder.

“How dare you? I am not ‘hot and needy’! That’s insulting.”

“I only know what my nose tells me, Darlin’,” Torin growled, frowning. “You can’t deny scent—you’ve got Kindred blood, too. Don’t tell me you don’t listen to what your nose is telling you and mine was telling me that you needed to come.”

“You don’t get to say when or how I come!” Her blue eyes flashed. “We’re partners on this case—not lovers! If you can’t play your role without going overboard, I’m not going to work with you anymore.”

“Then neither one of us is going to find the killer—because we need each other to solve this!” Torin told her. “You need my previous experience with serial killers and the benefits of the Kindred Mother Ship’s tech to analyze the clues. And without you, I never would have gotten access to these files.” He nodded at the list on the viewscreen.

Sky’lar had her arms crossed over her breasts—(she’d changed back into her uniform, just as Torin had)—and she was still glaring at him.

“All right but what I don’t need is some romantic or erotic entanglement with you. I also don’t need a partner who oversteps his bounds. From now on, I don’t think there should be any intimate contact between the two of us—no matter what ‘roles’ we’re playing.”

“Fine,” Torin said shortly. “It won’t happen again.”

“Good.” She nodded decisively, her long hair swishing across her shoulders. Torin wished she would put it back up—she was too damn beautiful with it down like that.

“Good,” he repeated. “Now let’s get on with studying these files.”

“All right.” Sky’lar settled beside him in the passenger chair and looked at the viewscreen. “Let’s have a look at what Mistress Hottalot sent us.”

“Agreed. We’ll start from the beginning.”

Torin clicked on the file of the very first murder—the Kindred ambassador to Zeta Prime. But he found he had trouble paying attention to the details as the vid played on the viewscreen.

He was irritated with Sky’lar for placing boundaries between them—even though he knew he shouldn’t be—she had every right to demand they keep things professional. But he was also angry with himself—why hadn’t he been able to stop tasting her? Why couldn’t he just kiss her panties and be done with it instead of tongue-fucking her to orgasm in front of everyone at the damn Yonnite society party?

What in the Seven Hells is wrong with me? he wondered. I’ve never had trouble controlling myself around a female before. What is it about Sky’lar that calls to me so intensely?

He didn’t know but the taste of her salty-sweet honey was still on his tongue and he couldn’t help wishing he could kneel between her thighs again and taste even more of it, so he could feel her pulling his hair and hear her moaning his name again…

EIGHTEEN

TORIN

“Good work, Commander Torin! These files are exactly what we needed.”

Torin’s Superior Officer, Commander Sylvan who was the Head of the Kindred High Council, nodded his approval over the viewscreen. Torin had sent the Mother Ship the files almost as soon as they had received them, so the scientists aboard would be able to start studying them.

“Thank you, Commander Sylvan, but I never would have gotten these without help. This is Special Agent Sky’lar from Portex Three.” He nodded at Sky’lar, who was leaning in to be part of the conference. “The Yonnites handed over everything without a single protest or delay when she asked for it,” he added.

“Hmm, yes—I can see why. You have the look of a Yonnite Mistress about you, Special Agent Sky’lar,” Commander Sylvan said, nodding at her. “And we’re deeply in your debt for helping us with this case.”
