I shook my head. “I’d have to see if one of my parents could drive us.”
“I’ll drive you in the Chevelle.” He turned around and winked. “Your very own police escort.”
Josie immediately played the disgruntled daughter. “Fine. Guess I’ll have to tell Ryan that my dad doesn’t trust him.” She stormed into the house, slamming the door behind her.
An act … it was all an act.
“Thanks, son.” Chief Watts rested his hand on my shoulder and squeezed it. I wasn’t his son, but most days I wished he were my dad. Except then Josie would have been my sister, and all of our kissing would have been really inappropriate.
Two weeks later, Chief Watts drove us to dinner. He and Savannah sat two tables away. It sucked not having our driver’s licenses yet.
An hour and a half later, he dropped us off at the dance. We had until midnight. We spent most of the time chatting with friends and fast dancing. When the DJ played a slow song, Darren Hayes’s “Insatiable,” I asked Josie to dance.
She smelled like cool mint gum and a really strong perfume. Josie wore a white strapless dress; and her hair was straighter than usual and silky. Her eyes had a bronze shadow and her lashes were heavy with mascara.
“After this song, let’s leave,” she said while draping her arms over my shoulders as I kept my hands a safe distance above her butt.
“Your dad’s not picking us up until midnight. It’s only ten.”
“When my dad picks us up, he’ll take us home. You’ll go to your house, and I’ll go to mine. How are you supposed to kiss me goodnight?”
“It’s not going to take me two hours to kiss you goodnight.”
She smirked. The pink lip gloss she wore earlier that night had worn off. “Then you’re not doing it right, Mosley.” That was the sexiest thing Josie had ever said to me.
I grinned. “I think our ride is here now.”
Josie’s grin matched mine. I took her hand and led her to the exit.
“It’s cold, Josie. Where are we going?” I slipped off my jacket and draped it over her shoulders.
“You don’t trust me. That sucks for you.” She pulled me toward the football field and under the bleachers where there was a folded blanket hidden at one end.
“Did you leave this after the game last night?”
She nodded, handing me the blanket. I shook it out and wrapped it around my back before taking a seat against one of the rails. Josie hiked up her dress and straddled my lap. I hugged her with the blanket, wrapping us in a cocoon.
“I’m gonna kiss you, Josie.”
She grinned, leaning in and rubbing her cold nose against mine. “Don’t tell me. Just do it.”
That was an awkward time in our lives. We were either fighting, pretending to ignore each other, or making out like our existence revolved around each other’s tongue probing the other one’s mouth.
The problem?
Josie gave me a perpetual hard-on. The way she hummed when we kissed.
Her fingers in my hair.
Her warm crotch and thin panties just on the other side of said hard-on and strained fly.
We didn’t move against each other at that point, but surely, she felt the difference between first sitting on me, and thirty seconds later when her tongue slid against mine and every ounce of blood in my body shot straight to my dick.
I only knew of a handful of boys in my class who had already lost their virginity. All of them to girls a year or two older. I wasn’t going to have sex with Josie, probably ever, if Chief Watts got his way. Had he known where we were that night and what we were doing, I would have been a lifeless body in the cemetery just down the street from our houses.
As if she could read my mind, Josie pulled away a fraction, breathless, eyes wide, lips slightly parted. “I want you to be my first,” she whispered.
I shook my head half a dozen times.
Josie grinned. “Not now. Just … when it happens, I want you to be my first, and I want to be your first.”
“Your dad will kill me.”
On a laugh, she threw her head back, fingers laced behind my neck. “Duh, Colten. We’re not going to tell him when it happens.”
Never. If it happened, we would never tell him.
But fuck … did I trust her not to let it slip? After all, everything changed when she felt the need to tell him she fell out of the tree because I leaned over to kiss her.
“What if I’m dating someone else when that time comes? Or what if you have a boyfriend?” I asked.
She shrugged a shoulder. “Doesn’t matter. We agree to be each other’s firsts, and that’s that.”
“So …” I narrowed my eyes. “If I have a girlfriend and she wants to have sex with me, I have to find you and have sex with you first?”
