However, if I were being honest, the loafers were kind of scary.

Where the fuck had the clothes come from?

Smiling a bit too wide as he got a beer from the fridge—a fucking beer—he held it out to me. “Want one?”

Okay, yes, it was late Friday afternoon and I was done with work…and they were my beers, but Emerson didn’t drink beer. Emerson drank fruity drinks and put getting blitzed on our joint calendar. That was the only time he drank. He did not grab beers on the weekend or look like this.

Wait.

Was his plumber coming over?

Was there a logical way to ask that where I wouldn’t sound insane?

“No, I’m good for now, but thanks.” I had a feeling being sober would be very important. “What should we do tonight? You don’t seem to have a sleepover on the calendar.”

When I’d first heard about those, I’d thought he meant something cute and sweet with a little. It didn’t. I wasn’t completely sure what they did because the answers were always confusing. But he always came back on Saturday cheerful and so excited to tell me what a wonderful Owner I was.

From what I understood, his friends liked me, but they thought it was sad he hadn’t gotten fucked yet, oh, and they were rooting for him to make sure I knew that I was keeping him.

I loved how honest my pretty doll was, but the logic was slightly convoluted. Not that I would ever tell him that, so I just focused on the fact that his friends thought I was good for him. That was scary too, but again, at least he hadn’t moved in with me?

“Alright. I can’t decide if it makes me look relaxed and average guy or like a dressed-up redneck.” He came over and kissed my cheek then frowned and tried again altering something in his expression subtly. “Hmm, which one looks more manly without being over the top?”

How was I supposed to answer that?

Wait. Had he said what he wanted to do tonight?

“Um, manly gay, right?” I needed to know that before I could figure out a good response.

“Oh yes. You’re very important to me.” Emerson gave me a beaming smile, then caught his reflection in the microwave and started shifting it to something less bubbly. “That’s better.”

What the fuck were we doing?

“Um, okay, manly gay.” Ignoring the fact that we were probably being really offensive in some way or another, I took him seriously. “I think quick peck on the lips or even just bro dude kind of nod with more heat in your gaze would work.”

That sounded like something my banker would do…and honestly, Emerson’s outfit looked like something Nick would wear on casual Fridays.

“That’s a very good suggestion.” He perked up again, nearly bouncing. “It’s all in the eyes.”

Probably?

“You’re a natural, so you don’t even have to think about it.” He sighed like I was cute, but I wasn’t sure what I’d done. “But this is why we practice. It’ll be fine.”

Oh, he was definitely up to something, but I wasn’t sure what. Random guesses were running through my mind, but that was always dangerous with my pretty doll when he was scheming.

And I was pretty sure that’s what he was doing because he’d called Eli just a few too many times today.

Oh dear.

I almost asked or at least thought about asking when I heard Angelique let out an angry scream. It was definitely the pissed-off variety not the scared or I saw a bug tone. I’d heard all of them enough times to know.

Instead of wondering what could be wrong, he frowned and straightened his shirt in the reflection again. “Yes, this looks very professional and not suspicious at all. Very white-collar businessman.”

Oh god.

What had he done?

What had he and Eli done?

It didn’t take me long to realize that asking that would nix any plausible deniability, so I just shook my head and frowned. “We’ve been together all afternoon, right?”

Come to think of it, he’d stuck to my side like glue.

He gave me a beaming smile before his professional manly look shifted back into place. “Smart men are so sexy.”

God, even his voice was slightly deeper.

I really hoped he knew neither of us would look good in prison orange.

“Let’s go see what’s upsetting Angelique.” He managed a very passable manly gay causal stride as he led us out of my apartment and up toward the front of the building. He’d been there so many times that even the odd layout didn’t confuse him anymore, giving him even more confidence in his walk.

We really were going to jail.

The angry voices coming from the reception area didn’t help clue me in, or make me feel any calmer. With nearly everyone else having left for the day, I didn’t even have another employee to question.

Hell, she’d been supposed to leave in just a few minutes too. The only reason she was still in the building and hadn’t snuck out early was because we’d had a late delivery of something…fabric, maybe? She had a thing for the delivery guy and it was the only part of her job she actually did.
