My blood turns to ice. Obviously I know the prison's full of moles. I had some. The damn Screaming Eagles have some, managing to get that Cole boy into solitary before we could deal with him. And obviously, they have them. I just never thought they'd be turned against me.
“I didn't tell them anything. I took the beatings and the threats and I kept my mouth shut.” I shudder as I think of my time with the Screaming Eagles before they dropped me off with the police. My voice is shaky as I try to convince him. “It took all I had not to crack, but I did it. I'm still useful. I could still be relevant. I did everything you said. There are hundreds of people in here because I did what you told me to. Please don't do this.”
I get a cold, hard laugh in return. “Funny you should mention that.”
The door ahead of us opens, and we walk in. The cell block seems to stretch on forever before we get to another door. “Where are you taking me?”
“You're in luck. It's rec time. Everyone’s out in the yard for a couple hours. Need to make sure you get your fresh air.” The way he says it makes it sound like something to be afraid of, even if I don't understand why yet.
The door opens, and he pushes me through, leaving me standing just inside while the inmates eye me curiously as the new guy. There are a lot of them, at least twenty or thirty. The kind of people that I used to take great pleasure in putting behind bars. Tattooed, rough, violent. I'm in my goddamn sixties, and they're throwing me in with this bunch? What the hell are they thinking?
The guard speaks up. “Listen up, shitheels! You've got a new friend here today. Let me introduce you to Judge Royce Kinkaid. I'm sure most of you are already familiar with him, but I'm sure you'd love a chance to introduce yourselves.”
Oh no.
I whirl on the guard. “Don't leave me here. They'll kill me. Please.”
With a snarl, he slams his hand into my chest, knocking me backwards so I lose my balance, hitting the ground hard. “The rec yard cameras are having issues today, by the way,” he yells. “Not sure what's up with them, but I expect you guys to be on your best behavior until we get them fixed. Shouldn't take more than an hour or two.” He looks my way. “It was nice to meet you, Judge.” And with a tip of his hat, he steps back and slams the door shut, leaving me with the inmates.
“But I did everything you told me to!” I yell at the metal door, and then they're on me.
A fist slams into my face and then everything goes black.
