I nod. He wants my obedience? He craves my compliance? I’ll give it to him, all of it, so he doesn’t have anything to hold against me.

It’s the last thing he’d expect from me.

“Yes, sir,” I say contritely. “I’m sorry, sir.”

His mirthless chuckle makes the skin on the back of my neck crawl, even as my sex spasms. It seems I’ve got a taste for the bad boy vibes.

“What’s so funny?”

A flick of his thumb under my chin makes me feel strangely chastened. My cheeks flush.

“That you think I buy that for a minute.”

“Buy what?”

“Your submission.” A beat passes while we lock gazes. I don’t reply. It seems he isn’t that easily fooled. Outside the car, I hear a door bang and a car start. All around us, his staff obeys him, scurrying like little ants to do their master’s bidding. He commands a small army, but what he really wants is to command me.

“You think,” he says almost thoughtfully, as if sifting through his thoughts, “that I expect a woman like you to bend so easily to my will?”

“A woman like me?” I ask, half stalling, half curious.

A thoughtful look flits across his features as he brushes the pad of one thumb across my cheek. My skin burns in its wake.

“Yeah, baby,” he whispers. “A woman like you. Bold. Willful. Wily.”

“Wily? Aw, now, Tavi, you flatter me.”

I shiver when his hands frame my face to keep my eyes on his. “You know who you are, Elise. And so do I.”

I swallow. He saw right through me, way more easily than I would’ve expected.

This man will not be so easily fooled.

“I’ll have your submission, Elise. But it won’t be handed to me.” Slowly, he shakes his head from side to side. I’m fixated on the strong cut of his cheekbones, his vivid eyes, those wicked lips. He’d walk into a room of strangers and all eyes would come to him because they would know that he’s a man to be followed. He’d blow his whistle and they’d come like children following the pied piper.

The low thrum of his voice drops to a seductive purr. “No, lovely. We’ll make a game of it, you and I, won’t we?”

I hold his gaze and refuse to back down. “Yes, sir,” I say, giving him exactly what he needs. “We will.”

CHAPTER 7

Tavi

Something happened back there. Something broke in me when I saw my cousin’s dead body. Elise saw me at my lowest.

I would’ve thought she’d think me weak, or that she could take advantage of me when my guard was down. After everything we’ve been through and everything she’s done, I sort of expected something from her that was an almost self-fulfilling prophecy.

But she didn’t take advantage. She didn’t kick me while I was down or try to capitalize on my weakness. No.

She did the opposite.

She welcomed me, imperfect and broken, and she understood.

It was the hottest, most erotic thing she could’ve done.

I’ve been with women who let me use and abuse them, women who spread their legs and would do anything I asked. It isn’t hard for a guy like me to find a fucking harem. Money and charm go a long way in bed.

But there’s more to sex than getting off. If there wasn’t, I’d never need to do more than hire a hooker or hit a strip club. I could have any woman I want and have, but it’s a hollow sort of pleasure.

There’s no chase. It’s too easy.

Everything about Elise is pure challenge.

I want to conquer her. I want to plunder her. I want to bring home the spoils of war and keep her as my bounty, a prize I’d cherish for I know she’s hard-won.

So I don’t buy it when she hands me her submission. She can pretend all she wants, but I see straight through her.

I’ll have it, though, just not easily.

When the last of the staff leaves, including the driver in the same car we’re sitting in, the sun’s begun to sink lower in the sky. Between sleeping late, our meal, and our visit to the morgue, the day’s nearly over.

But in some ways, I feel like the day’s only just begun, like the sun has just risen.

“In the house, Elise,” I tell her, giving her pert ass a little swat. She squeals and flushes pink.

I’m fully prepared to dominate this woman. Knowing that she likes it?

She’s in for the ride of her life.

When she doesn’t move quick enough, I give her ass another smack. “When I give you an instruction, you do it promptly. You understand me?”

“Yes, of course, right.” I love the way her cheeks flush pink, and imagine her ass cheeks the same color.

Fuck. She’s got a perfect ass. Her whole fucking body’s goddamn perfect.

We waste no time going inside, and when I have her where I want her I slam and lock the door behind us. I press her up against the wall and cage her in with my forearm along the wall. “You know what this means, don’t you?”
