“Wait, you didn’t even see the woman yet. You’ll change your mind. Plus, it’s only a few hours.” He sits up and pulls his phone out of his pocket. Meanwhile, I’m shaking my head. There’s no way I’m going on one of his dates after last week’s woman didn’t want to leave his house when I pulled up.

“You’ll change your mind, just wait.” This should be interesting, considering I don’t want or need to date, and I damn sure don’t want anything to do with a woman my brother may have chosen for himself.

“I highly doubt it. Need I mention the last woman you brought home?” I’ve got enough going on than to cater to one of Justin’s whims. The football team isn’t on the road this week. I’m also not needed for away games. And Justin knows this fact too.

The behind-the-scenes part of this job is my specialty—hiring and firing coaches, personnel staff, and making sure the roster is where it needs to be is where I’m needed the most. Until Michaels Phillips, our assistant coach, stuck his dick where he shouldn’t have.

“Look, then you can make your decision. I’d hate to cancel on her.” He slides his phone across my desk face up, and the woman he has a date with is looking at me. Jesus, she’s a knockout, unlike his last female, who was bleach blonde and full of plastic surgery. This woman has dark hair, luscious lips, and is all curves. I look up at my brother. My poker face is gone. My dick stirs in my pants. The nameless person on the screen has me re-thinking my stance on saying no to my brother.

“Jesus, Justin, between you and Phillips, I’m going to need a fuck ton more alcohol.” He has a shit-eating grin when I finally look up at him.

“The old man has got it going on. Can you blame him? She’s damn pretty. So is Noelle.” I’ll give him that, because he’s not wrong. Still doesn’t make dealing with the fallout any better. And damn my brother. He slipped her name in there on purpose. This motherfucker. Her name rolls around in my head, and now I’m imagining a whole lot more than I should with a woman I haven’t ever met before.

“Alright, I’ll go in your place. Will you leave me alone now? Some of us have to work.” Justin’s features are light to my dark. Light blonde hair, light green eyes, golden tan skin. He looks just like his mom, the one who unfortunately was tossed aside like my own mother. Our father is a pain in the ass. It’s why our relationship only works while we’re in the office. Otherwise, we don’t talk at all. My mother and Justin’s mom are good women and were while they were married too. Dad would get bored, divorce them, and move on to the next. It’s kind of hard to respect a man like that even if I do technically work for him. Though, it mostly has to do with my grandmother leaving me with a permanent position for as long as I want it.

“Thanks. I’ll text you all the details.” He stands up from his slouched position. I do as well and round my desk.

“Yeah, whatever. One day, all these favors you rack up are going to be cashed in. I hope you’re ready to pay up.” He extends his hand for me to take. I pull him in for a hug.

“Anytime you’re ready. It’s not my fault you don’t get away from this place enough.” Justin pretends to be revolted by the building, or maybe it’s potentially working here. I get it. It’s not for everybody. Hell, some days, I wonder if it’s for me.

“I’ll hold you to it. Later, brother.” I pat his back.

“Later.” Justin heads for the door, and besides having to deal with his house, I got off easy. Now, if the same could be said for the rest of my day.

Chapter 3

Noelle

I did it. I hit the accept button after going through a long and lengthy process along with paying a rush fee. Apparently, these things take time, which I had none of. I wasn’t prepared to not see a picture of my date before the day of the event, you know, the one that’s happening in less than two hours. I’m currently working on my hair after dealing with my makeup and getting the natural look just right. It needed to be heavier for the dark atmosphere, but I didn’t want it to look too heavy either. The pictures my mother has taken by a photographer will last forever, and the last thing I wanted was to look like a clown.

“I really hope they don’t do me dirty,” I say as I walk from the bathroom into my bedroom, searching for my phone. My nerves have been on edge all day. Okay, longer than that. All week, I had no one to talk to about my current situation, you know the date I hired. This isn’t a subject you can text your sister-in-law about and say Hey, you know when you talked about hiring a date? Well, I did it. My luck, my brother would see the text first, he’d lose his mind, tell Dad, who would then tell Mom, and then I’d be stuck dealing with Alejandro alone tonight. Nope, not happening. I’ll take whatever the dating service sends my way in order to avoid that conversation all together.
