“So what? At least she’ll have them. It’s Xmas and daddy’s going to spoil his little princess. Isn’t that right baby?”
She picked her little head up off his chest where he held her in the baby carrier and gave him a gummy grin, drool and all. “I remember when I used to be baby.”
I said it under my breath but when he stopped walking and stared down at me I knew he’d heard me. He seemed to be calculating something in his head and when he looked back at me I saw the recognition in his eyes.
It had been three months since our daughter was born and three months since we’d made love. Dev had gotten his hand on some childbirth books from the dark ages and they say that that’s how long it takes a woman to heal after giving birth.
No amount of arguing or common sense could get him to move from his stance. The doctor had given me the all clear more than a month ago and I was ready to climb the walls.
I knew he got it when he pulled me into his side and kissed my forehead. “You’re always going to be my baby. Tonight, I’ll show you.” With just those words everything seemed brighter.
The town was already in the Xmas spirit and this year, just like the last, I had lots to look forward to. A lot had changed in the past year. I have a new husband and a baby, and the way I’m feeling, if all goes right tonight there’ll be another one on the way soon.
