Beautiful.
“You want to know if I miss living with civilization?”
“I … I guess so, yeah.”
“No, I don’t.”
“I’ve got to know, how come? I mean, no internet.”
“Have no need for it, nor do I want it. The only real connection you need is with people and if they’re more interested in their phones or whatever, it’s not real.”
“I didn’t mean to upset you.” She held her hands up.
“You haven’t upset me.”
“What caused this? she asked. “William told me that you weren’t like this before.”
He wasn’t going to answer her questions. “We’re here,” he said, pulling up in the parking lot of the grocery store.
“That was fast.”
Mount didn’t linger. He didn’t need to make excuses for the way he lived his life. This was what he loved and the truth was, what he’d always wanted. Grabbing a large cart, he headed inside.
The truth was there was something missing from his life, and it was the love of a good woman. For a long time, he could ignore the want building inside him for a wife and kids, but he couldn’t be out there, not anymore.
He loved spending his days walking the forest, caring for his vegetable garden, chopping logs, taking care of his dogs, and when the woman came, he’d love her and their children more than anything.
Meghan rushed to keep up to his long strides. She had on a big jacket and pulled on a hat to cover her head and face. She looked incredibly cute.
He’d been around women, sure, but none of them had ever given him this kind of reaction, and he’d be lying if he didn’t say he was at least curious. He was, so much.
But he couldn’t have Meghan, and he certainly wouldn’t make her pick between the city life and his. It wasn’t fair to do that to anyone. She had a life of her own, and one day, she would go back to it, leaving him behind.
Chapter Two
Meghan wasn’t a domestic kind of woman.
Men came and went in her life, but she’d never lived with a man. Helping Mount put away the groceries, she couldn’t help but allow her thoughts to wander to imagine putting away shopping as an actual couple.
Stop getting crazy thoughts. You’re not together.
Still, every now and then, she was sure she caught sight of him watching her, checking out her ass, or even her breasts, and far from finding it offensive, she liked it. In fact, she’d removed her jacket and cardigan so he could keep on checking her out. She had no problem with him watching her. In fact, he could do it as many times as he liked and she wouldn’t complain. She’d never done anything like this to show herself off to a man. With Mount, it was different, though. She didn’t know how to explain it, just that it felt right.
Shaking those thoughts from her mind, she closed the refrigerator with her butt and stepped up to the counter.
Mount was feeding his dogs and she stood to watch him. He loved them, and seeing him run his large hands down their bodies, she was starting to yearn for his touch on her instead.
“So, I was thinking, you know, how about I make dinner?” she asked.
“You can cook?” He looked toward her. He’d been the one cooking for the both of them.
“Yes. I can cook a wicked lasagna. Are you happy with me giving it a go?”
“Sure, I don’t mind at all.”
She smiled and went to the fridge. She was going to wow him with her mad cooking skills. She’d gotten all the necessary ingredients out of the fridge just as the telephone rang. It was the land line.
Again, her cell phone didn’t work out here or when it did, it was impossible to hear anyone on the line.
It was strange. After the first hour, she’d put her cell phone away and hadn’t even missed it. There was a time she didn’t think she could ever live without her phone.
“Hey, Will. Yeah, she’s here.” Mount held out the phone for her to take.
Her fingers brushed his and she tried not to show it mattered to her, but it did.
Nibbling her lip, she waited. “Hey, Will. How are you doing?”
“Meghan, how are you doing?”
“I’m fine. You?”
“I’m great. I saw there’s a big storm coming your way and wanted to check and see how you’re doing.”
“I’m doing great. Believe me, I haven’t been out of Mount’s sight since I got here.”
“Good. Good.”
She watched as Mount got out some pots and pans for her to work. “Er, Will. What is … I mean, why is Mount the way he is?”
“Ah, so you’re curious?”
“Okay, yes, I am, but I can’t help it. You’re the one who sent me here and well, he’s just so … I don’t know.” Handsome, sexy, irresistible. I can’t stop thinking about what it would be like for him to touch me. My dreams and thoughts are going constantly to sex, and I’m not used to that.
