His phone beeps, and he smiles as he checks the screen. Then he turns the phone around to show me. It’s Kenzo. He’s storming up what appears to be a driveway, lifting and firing his gun as he goes.

Well shit!

He’s furious.

I can feel the anger palpating through the phone screen.

I raise my head and meet the gaze of my captor. I don’t know him, but he seems to know Kenzo and his brothers extremely well.

“Seems he’s pissed.” He pulls the phone away from me and sits back down across from me. “I’ve been trying to kill him for weeks now. You see, Kenzo never had any weaknesses…” he pauses, “until you.” I gasp at that last part. “His brothers are just as gifted, but my Kenzo was always so special to me.” He gets a far-away look in his eyes before he continues, “Would do any job without question. I’d tell him to kill a man, and he’d say ‘Sure.’” He sighs, and the sentimental gleam in his eyes turns into something more sinister.

“He did it all for the money and because I told him to. Until his brother brought him information about me. Did they really think I wouldn’t find out?” He shakes his head. “I know everything. But Kenzo came to ask me about it, unlike his brothers. And when I lied, I knew it was my first mistake. When he found that girl in Las Vegas? He was there for her and just so happened to come back married to you. Very unlike him.”

“Why are you telling me this?” I ask.

“Because I’ve been watching you. I’ve seen you with Marco.”

“He’s a client,” I tell him. “And Kenzo and I are nothing. I asked for a divorce.”

“Yes, I recall, in the graveyard. And what did you do for that divorce?” My cheeks heat. “You are a little old for my liking.” I shiver at his words. How much younger does he like them? I just hit thirty. “But I get the appeal.”

He reaches out and touches the side of my face with his finger before he grabs my jaw roughly and pulls me back to face him. “You will keep your eyes on me, do you understand?”

I can’t nod, but I manage a small, “Yes.” And that’s all it takes before he slaps me across the face, so hard I see stars.

Thirty

Kenzo

The snap of his neck is like music to my ears.

But it’s not the neck I want to snap.

It’s one of Pops’s men, the very same men he said he wasn’t training.

And I let him lie to me.

I let him walk over me.

I let him win.

I won’t make that mistake again.

Because now, there won’t be a second time.

He thinks he can hide Mayve from me, but little does he know I can find him.

Really, he should know better.

Did Pops forget who I am?

I hunt.

And I’m damn good at it.

It takes me only twenty minutes to figure out where he has her, and only another ten for me to get there.

Two men point their guns at me when I pull up and park my bike. But before they can do anything, I hear noises and turn to see my brothers.

Did Pops honestly think they wouldn’t come?

That’s a laugh.

He should have known better.

And it’s a shame that he didn’t.

Not just to him, but to us.

After all, he did train us, so he should know everything about us.

But that’s just it. We always hold things back.

It’s how we are so good—it’s never good to give away all your cards. You always keep some in reserve in case you ever need that trump card. And it appears like we need that right now.

We are the best in the country; possibly in the world. We have no trouble finding people. There is no one we can’t find. Even if it takes us months, we eventually find them.

I stride up to where the bodies lie, and my brothers stand waiting for me.

“You want us in or out?” Kyson asks. He left me to clean up this mess, but I couldn’t. Now I’ve only got myself to blame for what has happened.

But involving Mayve? That’s fucking unacceptable.

“Out,” I tell them.

Zuko nods and walks off—we know what he’s going to do. He going to make sure there are no others here. Make sure it’s safe.

Kyson gives me a hard look and cracks his neck. “You better fucking kill him this time,” he says, turning around and going the opposite way to Zuko. “I’ll be coming in after you in ten to ensure he hasn’t tied you up too.” He laughs.

“He can only wish.”

He nods, knowing that statement’s true.

I make my way to the door and knock.

Pops will already know I’m here. He isn’t dumb, and he knows I will eventually find him.

“Kenzo.” Pops’s voice rings out from somewhere deep inside the darkness of the house.
