A thought suddenly occurs to me, and I don’t like it. “Did you make them hire me?”

“What? No,” he says, looking offended.

I glare up at him and search his face for the truth, but I don’t think Heath would lie to me. He’s always been honest even when I didn’t want to hear it.

“I’m not saying that’s beneath something I would do,” he admits.

“You are a lawyer.” I roll my eyes, pretending to be annoyed. The reality is, I think it would be sweet if he tried to do something for me without me knowing. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy I got the job on my own, but it’s the idea that he would do it that I enjoy.

“The reason Gondal Assists is doing so well is because Phillips has a knack for picking the right graduates that know what they are doing.”

“Thanks.” I hope I’m not blushing, but my cheeks feel warm.

“It’s the truth. You don’t need me to tell you that, Meadow. You’ve always been the best at whatever you put your mind to.” If only that was true. “And as I said, I trust you. I’m handing over a lot of personal client information. Only you can access it and hand things off to Craig. Confidential details that my client is selling something can come down the line at any moment. That might not sound like much, but it could change stock prices if someone knew beforehand—”

“Insider trading,” I finish for him.

“Exactly. I’ve got enough of a mess on my hands with this.” He lets out a deep breath.

“Okay,” I agree and stand. “You look tired.”

“Are you saying I look like shit?”

“I don’t think you could look like shit if you tried,” I say, and he pushes off his desk to close the space between us. “I’ll figure this out. You should get some rest.”

“I haven’t gotten rest in years, Meadow.” His hand comes up to cup my cheek. “Not since—”

“You can’t go in there!” a woman shouts from behind us and snaps me back to reality. I step away from Heath a second before the door swings open and my sister comes strolling in.

“Can you make a will and leave everything to your cats?” Briar asks.

“I don’t believe you have an appointment,” Heath responds, but she ignores him.

“Like if I die, can my will cover the expenses of my cats?”

“She’s seriously asking this,” I tell Heath. It might be a bullshit reason to show up here just for this, but she still wants to know the answer.

“Yes.”

“Great, I need you to draw that up.”

“You’re not making a will,” I say to Briar, because I don’t want to even think about something happening to her.

“Your family has a trust, so that would only be an added clause.”

“Right, I knew that.” Briar’s eyes bounce between Heath and me. “So clause it up.”

“I’ll get right on that,” Heath says, but he’s full of it.

“Thanks, but you’re still the evil twin,” she informs him.

“Why am I the evil one?” Heath actually looks offended. “Wait, do you think I’m Mace?”

I snort a laugh because I’m not sure if I want to kill or kiss Briar right now. What was Heath going to say before she burst in here?

I’m not sure I want to know. The last time we were all alone, he broke my heart.

SIX

HEATH

“Why are you smiling?” Meadow asks when I enter the conference room.

“Because it’s ramen night. Get your stuff.”

She looks down at her laptop and all the files she’s got spread out around her. “I’m still working.”

“See you kids tomorrow,” Craig says before he’s out of his seat and walking toward the door. He doesn’t have to be told twice.

“Come on, the office is closed, and you can’t finish this tonight.” She gives me a look like she wants to bet, and I shake my head. “Let’s go. If we’re not there by seven, they won’t seat us.”

“Who says I’m going to dinner with you?” She finally gets up and grabs her stuff.

“I do, and I know for a fact that Briar isn’t having dinner with you tonight.”

“They say if you eavesdrop on conversations, you won’t like what you hear.” Meadow glares at me, and I wish I could tell her how cute she is when she does that.

“It’s hardly eavesdropping when you two were standing in the public hallway discussing it. Besides, the point is she’s working late, and you don’t have plans. Ramen is literally the best food on the planet, so get your ass up, and let’s feast.”

“You’re so bossy.” Meadow huffs as we walk to the elevators.

As we stand in comfortable silence, I think about the fantasy I have more often than any others. It’s the one where we work together and we get to spend our days teasing each other and sneaking into spare closets to make out. It’s having lunch in my office and then a hot fuck on top of my desk. It’s nights where we leave together and go out to dinner or go home and make it ourselves. Sure, I think about Meadow naked and spread out on my bed, but I also think about lazy Sundays where she puts on one of my shirts and we do a crossword puzzle. I also think about our kids and if they’ll have her nose or mine.
