“Oh yeah, and what am I supposed to do all day?” I challenge with my nerves on edge. Is this one of the side effects of taking nose candy?

“Take care of our babies.” No. This is all Logan’s doing. He’s hooked me, and now he’s reeling me in.

My eyes widen, transfixed, as I stare at him. “Babies? We don’t have any kids.” I play dumb, hoping I’m hearing him right and that I’m not having some stupid dream.

He threads his hands through my hair, pulling our faces closer. “We will, one day, but for now, we have Links and Cakes.” His mouth is about to touch mine. On cue, the dogs bark and pant, coming between us to nuzzle us.

“See, they already know better. The dogs know who their mommy is.”

“You’re nuts, Logan. We hardly know each other.”

“I knew the second I saw you that you were special to me. I know that I’ve got you right where I want you. And from what you told me last night, you want the same damn thing.”

“I was on drugs,” I say, feeling vulnerable.

He nods, and gone is the smile. “I remember, and that shit’s never happening again.”

I brush his scruff with my hands, relaxing him instantly. Staring into his brown eyes, I reply, “I agree. I don’t want to become Cara. I really hope she can get the help she needs.”

He turns his head and kisses my palm. “We’ll see to it. Now, have you eaten today?”

“I had something to eat before I went to sleep.”

“Okay. So what do you want to do?”

“I don’t have any clothes. I left everything at my cousin’s when I ran,” I say. I hate to be a burden, but I can’t walk around naked.

“Do you want to tell me what happened last night?” His brow quirks up, and there’s the tough guy back again. I’m not sure which one I find sexier: the brute, or the sweetheart.

No. “I…” I close my mouth and open it again. “I…” Forming the words seems too difficult, and panic sets in.

Reading my hesitation, he takes my hands into his, giving them the slightest squeeze. “Baby, if you don’t feel like talking about it, it’s okay. I know all I need to know.”

“I’ve never felt so frightened as I was last night.”

“I won’t let that happen again.”

“What about the diner? Am I still going to have a job?” I need to double-check because I’m becoming a problem from day one.

“Yes, if you want one. Although, I don’t know if I want you to be a waitress.”

“No? I’m not good enough?”

“Hardly. My jealous ass can’t stand fuckers getting your attention. One day on the job, and I felt every level of anger known to man when they stared at you.”

“You’re crazy.”

“For you? Absolutely. I’ve never felt so damn taken with a woman before. I know you don’t believe me, but you will one day. I’ll prove it every single day if I have to.”

His phone rings, and he tosses me an apologetic smile. “Sorry. This is probably something important.” He stands about two feet away from me with his back turned. I stare at his manly shape. His waist tapers off just at his jeans, and his ass has a very nice curve. I don’t think I’ve ever noticed a man’s ass like I have with Logan. He makes my body buzz just taking in his firm stance.

“Are you fucking serious?” Logan snarls on the phone, taking my attention away from his bottom and moving it to his head. He runs his fingers through his hair, tugging at the dark strands on the top. His shoulders tense up and then he lets out a rough sigh. “Okay. Call me as soon as you have something else.” He hangs up and then turns back to me.

“Is something wrong?”

“Nothing you have to worry about, Clover. How about we relax and watch a movie together?” We’ll end up having sex and even though I want him now, I know almost nothing about the man.

“I think twenty questions would be better.”

“Really? Okay.” He shrugs and takes a seat next to me on the sofa, bringing my legs up onto his lap, rubbing my calves. I let out a moan. “How old are you?” he chokes out. Oops.

“Twenty. You?”

“Thirty. Am I too old for you?”

“No. Am I too young?” I toss out, wondering if that’s why he was grumbling the first day we met.

“No. Do you have any siblings?”

“No. You?”

“No. I was raised by my grandparents. Why did you move to Valor?”

“I wanted to get away from the big-city life, and Cara offered me a chance to visit. Why do they call you Rooster?”

“While I served in the Army, I would wake up at the ass crack of dawn, waking the rest of the guys like a rooster. My drill sergeant called me that and the name stuck. Why Clover?” he asks, pulling me onto his lap.
