She’s everything to me and I knew this was going to happen between us. As I pulled into a physician’s parking lot, nurse Linda spotted me. She stopped and waited until I got off my bike which I intentionally did at a snail’s pace so that she might just keep moving along, but I had no such luck.

This damn woman didn’t understand the meaning of no. Still, just because she wanted to acknowledge me didn’t mean I needed to do the same. I walked straight past and into the enclosed walkway leading to the building. “Dr. Martinez, not even a good morning.”

“I’m actually busy; is there something you need?” My voice gives away my unpleasant temper.

“I’m just wondering why you haven’t called me.” A couple of visitors passed us and I wanted to snarl because they heard her.

“There’s no reason for me to call you. I’m engaged to someone else, and even if I wasn’t. I’m not interested. End of story. Please don’t harass me again. Do not slip your number into my jacket again and don’t flirt with me.” I stop in my tracks and lean in closer to add in a hushed whisper, “And don’t make up bullshit lies about being pregnant with my child.”

“Oh, you heard about that,” she hisses.

“Yes, I did and I’m sure as fuck not your baby’s daddy, so the fact that you put that out there I should have you in HR, being written up. I want the rumors squashed immediately. Do I make myself clear?” I warned her, standing tall wanting her to know I meant business. I hadn’t realized that we had moved toward the lobby when I finally stopped.

“I don’t know who you think you are. Just because your mama is a fancy director that you get to act like you’re in charge, but you’re a first year, and I have been a nurse for a very long time. You don’t get to tell me what you do. I could ruin your career before it even starts. And I’ll make sure your girlfriend dumps you.”

“You old whore, I’m not the kind of guy who allows anybody to take my woman away from me. Don’t mess with me.”

Dr. Brady approaches us. He’s the head of Surgery and one of my mentors. “Oh Dr. Martinez, there you are.” I check my watch, and my shift starts in fifteen minutes which means I would have already been in the locker room. “Oh Nurse Saurez, I thought you were leaving.”

“Oh, we were just having a private discussion.” I’m seething with rage, but she smiles, gives the doctor a wink, and walks away. “See you, Julian dear.”

She saunters away and I mutter under my breath.

I look over just in time to see that Everly is standing there with my lunch. “You forgot this.”

“Remember you’re only here a little longer and then your program is over,” Dr. Brady says. I nodded, and he walked away.

The tears in Everly’s eyes are ready to fall and are about to destroy me. Thankfully she doesn’t let them pour. Still, I can see the wheels turning in her head, and I’m not letting her get away with thinking anything dumb. Her body gives herself away. The cute little white canvas shoes squeak on the floor as she attempts to make an exit. I have my hand out before she can run, and I snag her wrist. and my mouth is on hers, closing down and a deep passionate kiss. “I love you, Everly.”

“So, is that Linda?”

“Yeah, that’s the fucking harpy that’s spreading the lies. I just told her to back off, and she threatened me.”

“She what? I should have ripped her hair out.”

“No, it’s okay, sweetheart. There are cameras in the garage. I think she forgot about that. I’m going to ask my mom to pull up the footage. She wants to ruin my relationship with you but I’m not sure why. Because you’re a hot doctor that she wants. It doesn’t make any sense though because if she’s knocked up why the hell would I want to take care of her kid. She’s delusional.”

“Oh my gosh, Everly you’re here,” my mom calls out.

“Mrs. Martinez, so good to see you.” My mom wraps around a quick hug squeezing her hard.

“Yes, he forgot his lunch though, so I wanted to drop it off.”

“Always taking good care of my boy. Is he taking good care of you?”

“I’m trying, Mom,” I answer, sliding my hand around Everly lower back.

“If you’re not busy, I’m getting off right now. Do you want to go to Steeleville with us?”

She looks at me as if she’s asking for permission. “It’s up to you, sweetheart.”

“I’d like that.”

“Give me a kiss and then you can head out with my mother,” I demanded, wanting so much more, but it’s not the time nor the place.
