He took my hand, and we started walking again. “I have something to tell you, too,” I said, after a while. “It’s nothing like your news, but you might find it interesting.”

Sam tried to lighten the mood with, “You found the lost arc of the covenant up there on the twentieth floor.”

“No, but I did find Mercanti’s journal. Turns out all the Men in Black did when they confiscated it was take it upstairs, to the higher security archives.”

“Which means it’s now under your jurisdiction.”

“Right, and no one had looked through it yet, according to the ledger,” I said. “The science department submitted a request to review it a few weeks ago, but the paperwork hasn’t been processed yet.”

“I don’t think it’s a good idea to give them—or anyone else—that information.”

“Neither do I. That’s why I redacted the formula.”

“What do you mean?”

“I blocked it out, so no one will be able to read it.”

Sam looked concerned. “Are you going to get in trouble for that?”

“No. I’m expected to make certain judgement calls in this position, and I believe this was a matter of public safety.” I glanced at my boyfriend and added, “It wasn’t an easy decision, because that information potentially had value. But you and I know that people would go to great lengths to try to get their hands on it and misuse it, so I made a choice. I feel like I disarmed a bomb.”

“You did the right thing. Even though Rosselin’s behind bars, who knows who he might tell about the formula?” The three brothers he’d hired had rolled over on him in record time to save themselves. In addition to attempted murder and our failed abduction, Rosselin had also gone down for an entire list of crimes, including breaking into and destroying the archives. Whether he’d also been behind the fire at Mercanti’s lab was still a mystery, but he'd been found guilty of enough to keep him locked up for the foreseeable future.

“Exactly.”

“You know, it’s lucky the science department’s request didn’t get processed before you returned to work,” he said. “If it had, then you wouldn’t have had any say over what happened to the formula.”

“Actually, April may have tied up that paperwork on purpose. When I talked to her last week, she alluded to putting the formula’s fate in my hands.”

“Maybe she wanted to give you closure,” Sam said, and I nodded. That seemed to be the word of the day.

After lunch at Sam’s favorite burrito truck, he glanced at his watch. “We still have a few minutes before we have to be back. What do you want to do?”

“This.”

I planted a big kiss on him, and he grinned. “Maybe I should find us a nice, private rooftop for a few minutes.”

“Excellent idea.”

Sam scooped me into his arms and flew straight up into the clear blue sky. Once again, I couldn’t help but laugh. It was hard to contain that much happiness.

THE END
