“What is it?” Ava asked.

“Does anyone know who Harlow might have been dating?” Big Dick asked.

“Harlow wasn’t dating anyone,” Ava said. “She would have said something. There was no one in her life.”

“Why?” Smokey asked.

Big Dick looked at his prez and he didn’t have the words.

“She miscarried, didn’t she?” Raven asked.

He turned to look at Raven and couldn’t bring himself to say the words so he nodded.

Ava sobbed. “She never said anything.”

“The doctor said it was still early, a couple of weeks, but … she lost a lot of blood. The impact of the car, and, I don’t know, it must have been…” He couldn’t bring himself to think about how scared Harlow had been. Did she even know she was pregnant?

He had always been close to his sister. Yes, they bickered and didn’t always see eye to eye, but she was his little sister. He loved her so damn much, and he wasn’t there to protect her. He fucked up.

“Is she going to be okay?” Hunter asked.

He looked toward his VP and nodded. “The doctors said she’s stable for now, but they don’t know how she’s going to feel about everything. This will be hard.”

“We’ll all be here,” Ava said.

“She has the club,” Smokey said. “We’ve always got your back.”

He nodded, knowing the club would always be there. “I’ve got to go back and be with her.”

No one tried to stop him and he got to his feet and left.

Chapter Eleven

The beeping sound was starting to get annoying. Harlow opened her eyes and then closed them. The light seemed a little too bright.

“Hey, Squirt,” George said.

She groaned.

“Why do I feel this is going to be bad news?” Harlow asked.

“Do you not remember?”

She opened her eyes and turned her head to look at her big brother. The events that led her to the hospital played in her mind and she groaned. “Ouch.”

“Yeah, ouch.”

“Someone tried to run me off the road.”

“They didn’t just try. They succeeded.”

“I wonder if I didn’t give the right amount of cookies in an order,” Harlow said, groaning. “My body hurts.”

She sighed and looked toward George and the way he looked at her was strange.

“What is it?” she asked.

George got to his feet and she knew something bad had happened when he sat on the edge of the bed and took her hand.

“You’re scaring me.”

“Do you need me to call someone?” he asked.

“No.”

“Harlow … you were pregnant.”

She looked at her brother and didn’t dare move. “What?”

“You miscarried but you were pregnant. The doctors said from the blood and … you were not that far along…”

She opened her mouth and closed it.

“I … I had no idea,” she said.

“Who is it?”

“George, don’t!”

“He needs to know.”

Harlow pressed her lips together. “He doesn’t want to know. It doesn’t matter.”

“You were dating someone and you didn’t tell me?” George asked.

“It was nothing. It meant nothing. It’s over anyway. It didn’t last so there’s no point in telling anyone anything.” She had been pregnant with Hunter’s baby. She had known there was a high risk of that happening, seeing as they hadn’t used protection. Did it mean they had caught on that first time?

Harlow didn’t know and right now, she didn’t want to know. Her body hurt and she had to try and get her head around being pregnant.

What?

How?

Hunter had ended things.

That fresh pain was too much and knowing she carried his child and had lost it was all too much. She tried to fight the tears. Especially as her big brother was there, watching her.

She wanted to be strong, but she couldn’t do it. “I bet you’re disappointed in me.”

“What?”

She pulled her hand away from him, but George reached out and took it back. “No. Hell, no.”

“Come on?” she asked, tears swimming in her eyes. “You’re upset with me.”

“No, I’m not upset with you. Do you need me to call him? Do you need me to go and kick his ass?”

“No.”

“Do I know him?” he asked.

Harlow stared at her brother. She had never lied to him and she couldn’t bring herself to do so right now.

“Do you know who pushed me off the road?” Harlow asked.

“Harlow?”

“Please, is my birthday present … okay?” She needed to change the subject.

“It’s not, but I’m going to fix it.”

“Don’t do that,” Harlow said. “I’m so sorry.”

“This is not your fault.”

She should have just gone home, but she had needed to drive away to help deal with her … problems.

“How is Ava?” Harlow asked.

“She’s fine. They’re all here. They want to come and see you.”

“And they can wait to come and see her.”

Harlow tensed up as suddenly, Mrs. Erickson herself walked through the door.

“Mom?”

“Oh, sweetheart. How are you feeling?”

“I’ve been better,” Harlow said, and she looked at George. Why were her parents here?

“Jonah was the one that found you. Jude came and told me what was going on.”
