Chapter 5
Skylar Wallace
Fuck. My. Life.
The pig ran.
Red shouted and ran after Damon.
Everyone just froze and seemed to stare in shock.
But the shock didn’t last nearly long enough. There was a new tingle in the air. Tension ramped up a thousand percent like a giant rubber band stretched to its absolute limits.
“That’s not a pig!” Sky blurted out at the top of his lungs.
“What?” Wyatt choked out.
“It’s not a pig! It’s Red’s ex-boyfriend! Fuck! I mean—” Sky was getting tongue-tied in his haste to keep the wolves from devouring poor Damon before they could change him to human again.
“Red turned a human into a pig,” Nolan explained. “That’s a human! Not a pig!”
Wyatt growled out a curse and darted toward the bonfire, shouting at the top of his lungs to all of his pack that the pig was a human and not to eat the human. Because…ewww.
Sky jogged after Nolan to where a group of about twenty people were in various states of undress around a bonfire, listening to Wyatt attempt to explain that the pig that just ran into the woods was, in fact, a human under a witch’s spell. The normal night he promised Nolan just had to get a little weirder.
“Is there anything we can do to help?” a smaller, leaner man inquired as he stepped close to Wyatt. Oh! That was Bel Varik’s other mate, River.
“Yes.” Sky sighed with relief. “Would it be possible to gently herd Damon toward the house? Don’t hurt him or get too close. He’s scared enough already. But once we get him in one place, we can turn him back into a human.”
“Man, how do we know this Damon is safe with you in the first place?” another wolf demanded from the other side of the bonfire.
It was a fair question. A person had to wonder what the fuck was happening when a pair of witches showed up with a human turned into a pig.
“The other witch rescued him from an abusive ex. The only way to safely sneak him out was to turn him into a pig. Otherwise, the ex would be able to track him in his human form,” Nolan deftly explained, leaving Sky’s mouth hanging open.
Then the saucy man had the audacity to wink at him. “I think I’m getting this down.”
There. That was it.
Swoon. Heart eyes. Fireworks exploding in a black sky.
He had no hope of getting over Nolan Banks now.
Wyatt snapped him out of his near faint when he loudly clapped his hands together and held them over his head. “All right, everyone! Treat the pig as the warm-up. No teeth. No claws. Just get the pig safely in the hands of a non-shifter. Afterward, we hunt some deer.”
Several whoops and shouts went up and clothes were thrown off. No one seemed to care that a pair of outsiders were in their midst. Sky and Nolan quickly turned their backs to the men and women getting naked. Sky’s cheeks were burning, and it had nothing to do with the bonfire. The shifters were completely comfortable with their nudity. The prudes meant nothing to them.
Above the crackling of the fire drifted grunts, snaps, and the occasional howl.
Sky glanced at Nolan to see him peek over his shoulder, his mouth falling open. They both turned at the same time to see a number of wolves in a variety of sizes and coat colors dotting the yard. A few were slower so they could catch their human bodies reforming as bones broke and mended in a heartbeat while skin sprouted luxurious fur.
“I’ve never actually witnessed a shift before,” Sky murmured. “This is…it’s…amazing.”
An arm wrapped around his shoulders and he looked up to see Nolan cuddled close to him, his eyes wide as he watched the wolves. A few playfully tackled each other and yipped as if beckoning packmates to play; then they were off in a flash, disappearing into the darkness as if they were made of it.
“Wow,” Nolan breathed. A soft chuckle followed right behind it. “I can’t believe I got to share a first like that with you. I guess I figured you’d seen it all.”
Sky leaned his head against Nolan’s chest. “Nope. Not even close. Particularly when it comes to the other species. I’ve had very little contact with the shifters, and only slightly more with the vampires. So, still lots of firsts to experience.”
“I like that.”
He was just about to melt all over again when he recalled that Red was currently running through the woods in the dark after his ex-boyfriend pig while shifter wolves were also giving chase.
“Shit! We need to find Red!” Sky gasped.
“The wolves can help.”
Sky shook his head. “Yes, but they can’t explain that they’re helping. If Red sees one and is worried it might attack Damon, he’ll start slinging spells.”
“And start a fight with the shifters. Yep. Got it.” Nolan was off like a shot, running toward the woods where Red had disappeared just a few minutes earlier. Sky pulled his phone from his pocket and turned on the flashlight. He was not dressed for running through the woods. He’d chosen his nice hard-soled dress shoes, for God’s sake.
