I purse my lips to keep from laughing. I can imagine Uri’s face if he heard this. I’m sure he would be amused.
Although there isn’t a Donati man who would deny Sim. She has them all wrapped around her finger and doesn’t know it. She’s like a baby sister in the family and they would hush you in a heartbeat over her.
She makes a face and continues. “I would ask Nico, but he teases me all the time. This is something I want taken seriously. I cannot ask Michael because he will be upset with me for going against—”
She cuts off and waves her hand in front of her face in frustration. “I need your help. I feel most comfortable asking you. You understand women.”
“Sim, just tell me what it is you need. I don’t need you to explain yourself. If it’s important to you, I will handle the request,” I say before she can make herself any more flustered.
“I have a friend whose husband used to play baseball professionally. His name is Cameron Perry, number thirty-three. She is sad because he had to go away to the Dominican Republic for a coaching position.
“I believe he would be an asset to the sports agency. I would like Nico to offer him a job so he can be here in New York with her and the children and not miss this pregnancy as he did her other. He also has ties to Texas if they should need him there.
“He is originally from Texas. They have a home there. He would relate to Bradley. I would like if you could make this request on my behalf.”
“Is that all you need?”
“He is very proud. I would like them to make the offer without mentioning me or his wife.”
“That it?” I ask with a smile.
“Yes, that is all I needed to ask,” she says and nods, her eyes landing everywhere but on mine.
“I will take care of this for you.”
She falls back in her seat, looking relieved. I’m curious. Sim doesn’t have many friends outside our circle and even within the circle, she’s not super close to many. Not that she doesn’t want to be.
I think she gets overwhelmed by all the different personalities. Everyone loves her, but we give her her space to be her. I want to meet this friend.
CHAPTER 48
He Needs You
Cameron
I was on a flight as soon as my father called me. It was good to hear his voice sounding so strong. He called to tell me Caleb is fucking up his life and he needs an intervention before our mama causes him to lose it all.
I’m so livid with her. The way she tried to wear me and Amina down almost cost me everything. Now she’s working on Cal and Nicole.
Why can’t that woman allow us to be men? We chose the women we love. She needs to go have a seat somewhere. The only good thing that came out of her bullshit was the opportunity to see my family.
I came to New York first to pick up my little crew before we all go to Texas, so I can knock some sense into my brother. Nicole is one of the best things that has ever happened to Cal. His babies adore him.
Having your family walk away from you isn’t something I want to describe. It was worse than when Amina had to remain in hiding. I thought I was going to die.
I felt stupid for the seeds I allowed my mama to plant. None of it made sense in hindsight. I was just so focused on baseball and making something of my career so I could support Cal as a teammate and his brother, I allowed her to manipulate things that weren’t there.
Thankfully, it all made us stronger. I hope the same can be said for Cal. He doesn’t need this. He worked hard to build his life.
“Oh, my God. I was about to take your fucking head off,” Amina breathes as she stands before me in the hallway of our home with one of my bats held up in the air.
I can’t help but laugh. She looks adorable in her little pajamas with her little baby bump as she stands ready to protect our family. I saunter closer to close the distance between us.
“Damn, I’ve missed you,” I say as I look down at her.
Reaching for the bat, I pull it from her grasp and use my other hand to palm the back of her neck and tug her to me. I crush her lips with mine and kiss her deeply. She moans into my mouth as I deepen the kiss.
I lift her onto my waist with one arm and drag the bat behind me with the other. Once in our bedroom, I close the door with the tip of the bat then drop it to the floor.
