I step closer. “John…”

He’s still frowning. Suddenly, his eyes widen. “Oh fuck.”

I nod.

“I haven’t even gotten them to sign the paperwork, Kalbrac.”

“Do you think I care about paperwork?” I’m running out of patience.

John sighs and steps out of the way, allowing me to rush past him. I was moments from bodily removing him from blocking me.

It takes me less than a second and one inhale to know my mate is the one passed out on the loveseat. I’m on my knees next to her in a flash, cradling her head in my palm, grasping her small hand in mine. “What happened?”

She takes my breath away. My fingers thread through her thick brown waves. I suspect her tanned skin is paler than usual. I want to see her eyes.

I might have pushed Dankin out of the way a bit to get into this position. He’s next to me now, a hand on my shoulder. “I don’t know yet. I just got here.”

“She fainted,” one of the other females says. “She’s been overly tired lately. The doctors don’t know why.”

I glance at the female now standing at my side.

She’s wringing her hands with worry. “Are you a doctor, too?”

“No, Little one. I’m her mate.”

The female gasps. Her eyes go wide.

The other female behind her grabs the first one’s hand. “Are you sure?”

“Positive,” I inform them as I turn my attention back to my mate. I’m not panicking because I can feel her heartbeat and her steady breathing. She’s not choking or in cardiac arrest or anything. Nothing is obstructing her airway. She’s just asleep. But why?

“I need to examine her,” Dankin says.

“Can we move her upstairs? Is that safe?” I ask him.

Zack clears his throat behind us. “Kalbrac…”

I rise, still holding my mate’s hand. First, I look toward the two females. “You’re her friends?”

They nod. “She’s… You can’t just take her,” one of them says.

I smile at them, trying to ease their obvious panic. “She’s mine. That’s the way of things. I will figure out what’s wrong with her and get her the best care immediately.”

Dankin steps closer. “I’m the doctor from the mothership. I have equipment that will determine what ails her and get her on the mend. Our medical knowledge is far superior to anything on Earth.”

The two females glance at each other and then their friend. “She will freak out when she wakes up. We need to be with her.”

“I’m sorry,” I say softly. They won’t see her again. “I will calm her. I promise.”

One of the females turns toward John. “She didn’t sign the waiver. You said she had to sign the waiver,” she argues.

John holds up his hands and looks toward Zack.

Ignoring both of them, I turn back to my mate and carefully lift her into my arms. I hate how limp she is. She’s wearing black slacks, so I don’t have to worry about tucking a skirt under her. She’s out cold. That can’t be good. I want answers. “My apartment,” I tell Dankin. “Now.”

Dankin nods and follows me.

“Sir,” one of the females shouts.

I glance back. Her panic is palpable in the room. I understand, but I can’t fix it, and I don’t have time to explain myself. “I’ll have her contact you when she revives,” I promise. It’s the best I can do. We don’t ordinarily let our mates make any contact with Earth again once they’re claimed, but the circumstances here are far outside of the ordinary. I’ll make sure my mate is able to send word to her friends somehow.

The other female holds out a red purse that matches my mate’s deep red blouse. “This is hers. Please… Fix her.”

I give a sharp nod while Dankin takes my mate’s purse from her friend. And then I’m on the move, ignoring the grumbling concern coming from both Zack and John.

Dankin is on my heels.

“What could it be?” I ask when we step into the elevator.

“No idea, but I will find out.”

Chapter Three

Clara

I awake with a start. I can sense something is not quite right. I’m warm and comfortable, but where am I? The moment I open my eyes, I gasp.

Someone is holding me. His face is close to mine. His brow is furrowed, but he suddenly smiles. “Hey there, Little one. Welcome back.”

My breath catches as I stare at him in total confusion. Who is he? I vaguely remember feeling light headed. I bet I fainted. I’m at Club Zoom. I was with Tanya and Misha. Where are they? They wouldn’t leave me. They know I’m fighting an unknown illness.

The man has a hold of my hand. Actually his fingers totally engulf mine. I notice this when he lifts mine up to his lips and kisses my knuckles. He’s enormous.

I gasp. He’s one of the Eleadian males. He has to be. I’ve never seen a man as large as him before. I feel like a baby in his arms.
