“Yeah, I’ve heard.”

Quinn looks out at the wedding reception. “I should just find someone to forget with.”

“Good idea,” I agree, nodding to where a couple of ladies are watching us. “There is a gaggle of women right there.”

He shakes his head. “I grew up with them. There is no hooking up with them without feelings. On their part, not mine.”

“That’s unfortunate. Think I got a chance?”

He chuckles at that. “Pretty sure you’d piss someone off if you did.”

I laugh with him. “Probably.” I turn to order another beer, and then I grab my wallet to leave a tip. When I open it, though, I notice my hotel keycard isn’t in there. I curse as I pull some cash out for the tip. “I think I left my room key at the hotel bar.”

Quinn makes a face. “That blows.”

“It does,” I agree, knowing I’ll have to swing by the front desk for another one before I crash for the night.

We lean against the bar, watching the party take off, and I smile when I see Owen’s twin brother Evan with his arms wrapped around his girl, Callie. I’d go hang out with him since Quinn is making me depressed, but I get tired of being the third wheel with all of my friends. I need to start hanging with some of the single hockey players back home. All my friends are getting locked down quickly, and while I’m happy for them, I’m bored out of my mind socially.

Which has been an ongoing thing lately. Nothing has kept my attention, nor anyone. It’s weird, but I blame my friends. If they were out with me, trying to hook up with girls, I’d have more fun. Instead, I’ve been staying at home with Owen and Angie, watering fucking plants.

I really need new friends.

“I don’t think I’m going to get laid tonight,” Quinn says, and I let out a long sigh.

I tap my beer to his and nod. “Same, bro. Same.”

Chapter Four

Tennessee

Tension is still as thick as my ass as I head downstairs with Lindy and Josie to start our night. Josie hasn’t really spoken to me since I called her out, and I have no desire to speak to her. Which leaves poor Lindy in the middle, trying to smooth things over. Not that she is trying, really. They are talking about something on social media as I lean on the wall, wishing like hell I could go back to the room and watch some trash TV.

As we get off the elevator, my phone rings. I look to see it’s my mom.

“Hey, Mom. What’s up?”

“Hey, honey. Are y’all about to head out?”

“Yes, ma’am. We’re on our way down to FGL House.”

“Well, that sounds like a blast for a night to remember,” she says, and while I don’t feel the same, maybe I should. Maybe I should let go of what has been said, just enjoy my friends before I leave. I don’t know. But then I sense a hesitation in my momma’s voice. “Listen, I saw Denis’s momma at the Piggly Wiggly.” And there it is. Fuck me. “And we were talking. I told her about your new job, and she said that Denis was missing you like crazy. So, I may have meddled a bit.”

It takes everything in me not to curse at my momma. “Momma, why?”

“I know, I’m sorry. But he’s there.” I swear, I feel like I’m in a movie because just as she says that, I see Denis by the sliding doors of the hotel entrance. “He wanted to celebrate with you, and you know I adore him.”

And this is another reason I’ve got to get the hell out of this state. My momma meddles like no other. It’s like she’s scared I’ll never find anyone but Denis, and she is beyond wrong. “I’m going to let you go so I don’t yell at you.”

“Tennessee, I did it with love.”

“As you always say. And sometimes, it makes me question this love of yours. Bye, Mom.” I hang up as Lindy’s and Josie’s gazes fall on me.

“What’s wrong?” Josie asks, and I tip my chin toward Denis. All three of us look at him, and I can tell right away he’s pretty sure we’re seeing and talking about him. Don’t get me wrong; Denis is a decent-looking dude. Sandy-brown hair, combed to the side, dark eyes, and a nice line to his jaw. He wears a pressed blue polo with beige golf shorts. Denis is also my height, maybe a bit shorter if I’ve got my heels or boots on. He is skinny as a rail, and that doesn’t do it for me. I’m a big girl; I want a guy who can literally toss me around like a sack of potatoes and fuck me senseless. Denis fucks like he’s scared he’ll hurt me. Because he’s nice. That’s it. Nice. He has always treated me with nothing but respect, but he does not make me burn like the fiery depths of hell with desire.
