She coughed and hastily tried to stop. Gideon brushed her forehead with his lips, resisting the urge to put the oxygen mask back on her. Her hand turned in his and caught at him, clutching tightly.

“You’re just having a bad moment, Rory. A spasm. This is going to pass. Keep breathing. In and out. You know how,” Gideon coaxed.

Her gaze clung to his as if he were her lifeline, and she nodded. Once she was breathing properly, he brought her hand back to his mouth. That’s my girl.

Her vivid green eyes moved around the room for the first time and found Larrsen in the chair by the door. Gideon felt her forming her thoughts and trying to put them into words.

“Don’t talk. Paul said absolutely not. You’ll destroy all his work, Rory.”

Her gaze jumped back to his. I’m sorry. I’m not used to this.

You were telling me about the junk mail.

Yes, after the officer gave me the bag, I put it in the trunk of my car and forgot all about it until someone destroyed my car. The trunk was popped open, and the mail was thrown all over the parking garage floor. Janice picked it up and stuffed it back in the torn bag, and she put it in the closet in the lounge. I didn’t look in the bag. It was junk mail. But I do recall someone mentioning a notebook. I use notebooks for my songwriting, but as a rule, I don’t keep them in my trunk. I was so upset I didn’t think to question it.

You never actually saw the notebook they talked about.

No. She shook her head.

Gideon leaned closer to her and caught her head between his hands to keep her still. Her gaze clung to his. Red, we can’t give any clues to Larrsen that we’re speaking telepathically. He already suspects, and it’s classified information. I don’t want there to be any problems.

She looked puzzled. He groaned and pressed a kiss to the corner of her mouth. Rory was never going to be one of the GhostWalkers who could look completely expressionless—at least he’d always be able to read her.

How are you going to relay whatever I tell you to him?

I’m just going to tell him, and later you can write it out for them. Or we’ll write it out, and you can sign the statement. We’ll make it work for their investigation.

The tote should be in the lounge. If he can’t locate it, Janice will know exactly where it is. I don’t want him to get his hopes up, Gideon, because I don’t know for sure, but Detective Ramsey could have dropped the notebook into my tote as he was running out the door. Or it could be one of my notebooks, and I had it in the trunk and forgot about it.

It’s a long shot, Gideon agreed. But worth a try.

On the other hand, if Ramsey knew his wounds were fatal and whoever had shot him was still coming at him, he would want to find a place to get rid of the notebook. He’d know that if he was dealing with a policeman, no one would think twice about a cop examining his body. He wouldn’t want to keep the notebook on him. It would appear as if the cop was trying to help him. Forensics would go over the lounge, but the mail? No one would be looking at junk mail.

I’ll get the word to Larrsen. I want you to cooperate with Paul. When he works on you, there’s always an exchange.

Her little frown was back. A risk, you mean. I told you how I felt about anyone taking risks for me.

“Rory, Paul’s a doctor. You have no idea how many doctorates he has. The kid can do any kind of surgery you need, and doctors are always consulting with him. He knows what he’s doing. If he says something, you just do it.”

She glared at him, her frown deepening, brows drawing together. You’re deliberately misunderstanding me. Go away. Take Larrsen into the other room and give him the information. But before you do, redeem yourself and tell me Lydia and the others are safe.

That’s all it will take to redeem myself? He flashed a grin at her. Red, you’re going to have to be a little tougher than that.

He knew she never would be. His woman was all about compassion and kindness. He’d need her to balance his predatory traits.

They’re safe, aren’t they?

We’ve got them in our apartments across from Mack and Jaimie’s warehouse. Very secure, under guard. Very nice apartments. They can rent them for the same as they were paying in the other place, each of them. We’re making it easy for them to relocate once this is over.

You didn’t offer me that deal.

Because you don’t get the same deal. You’re going to move in with me. You can visit them. He made it a decree, and he didn’t plan on backing down from it. He might have gotten an eye roll, but he couldn’t be sure.
